Hey Everyone!

Do you have a child or children at school?

Do you ever ask them, 'How was your day?'?

Lots of parent ask this because they want to check that their child is happy. A happy child learns better than a sad one so it's understandable for parents to want to check.

The problem is that this is a closed question, encouraging the answer of, 'Fine', 'Good' or something equally vague. It often becomes a routine greeting that the child is deaf to.

Children do so many really interesting activities in school even when they are young. As they mature they often study subjects that interest them in depth. It great to encourage the habit of sharing these experiences with the fam when they see you. The habit of sharing is something we can begin now if we ask the right questions.

Here are some suggestions I thought of for younger children:

  • What made you smile today?

  • What was the book about that your teacher read?

  • What’s the word of the week and show me how you use it?

  • What did anyone do silly to make you laugh?

  • What was the best thing that happened today?

  • What did you do to help anyone today?

  • Who was pleased you said 'thank you' today?'

  • Who did you sit with at lunch?

  • What made you laugh?

  • Who inspired you today?

  • What did you hear that surprised you?

  • What did you see that made you think?

  • Who did you play with today?

  • What did you have for lunch and did you like it?
  • Did anyone get in trouble today? What did they do?

  • What are you looking forward to tomorrow?

  • What are you reading?

  • What was the hardest rule to follow today?

  • If you could change one thing about your day, what would it be?

  • What made you feel happy?

  • What made you feel proud?

  • What made you feel loved?

  • If you could switch seats with anyone in class, who would it be? And why?

I bet you can come up with many more open questions that will really help you understand your child's school day.

These questions are most appropriate for younger children so can you come up with some for the secretive teens, haha?

Thank you so much for reading my post.
