As I noted yesterday, I've had multiple daily visits lined up for Tucker and Sasha.

Their mom had a business trip out of town and was due back tonight.

I was looking forward to an evening at home and hanging out here.

That all changed with the e-mail that arrived this morning and had been sent just after midnight. Mom, it seems, had something happen (I don't know what and didn't ask) that required surgery. She will have to be in the hospital for at least another few days.

So, 'the kids' are 'mine' until she returns. We've been through this before, you see.

A few years ago she was on vacation in Florida, visiting her parents. While she was there, her dad had a heart attack. One week turned into three! I managed to keep her up-to-date on things back here so she didn't have that added worry. It's nice to actually be in a position to offer tangible help in an emergency.

Regardless whether it's a client/service provider relationship, you can't help but get to know folks on a personal level in this business. Being that she's my second-ever client, we've developed a comfortable degree of trust over the years even if we rarely see each other in person. She knows I love her 'babies' just as much as she does and will tend them well.

The side-benefit is her house still looks 'lived in'. The mail & papers don't pile up, there are tracks in the snow showing recent activity. The trash bins go out & come in like everyone else's. The lights are turned on/off as needed and even the TV is geared to mirror a regular day.

That's how you provide peace of mind to clients
who trust you with their critters, keys, and alarm codes!
