Landscape photography: Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve, Mexico

Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in the state of Yucatán, Mexico.
The site presents a rich diversity of landscapes and ecosystems on a 60,348 hectares of of forest, dunes, mangroves and both fresh and sea water.

The reserve’s biological diversity is incredible. The reserve protects 59 species of Mammals, 80 species of Reptiles, 99 species of Fish ,16 Amphibians and a rich and diverse Flora.

We saw lots of flamingos during the boat tour and many other birds, including lesser black hawks, parrots, lots of wading birds, lots of frigates, pelicans, cormorants, egrets, etc. They migrate south to the Yucatan to escape the freezing temperatures of northern climes.

If you are a flamingo´s lover, this is definitely a place for you. You’ll see them everywhere you look because the reserve is a huge refuge for the North America’s largest nesting colony of Caribbean flamingo.

Ría Lagartos (means the “Alligator River”) is a great for nature lovers and bird watchers.

It takes about three hours from Merida and two hours from Cancun but it's really worth to go there. Believe me!

FUN FACT:
Biologists have discovered that flamingos spend up to 70 per cent of their day feeding.
