시간여행과 액션의 만남은 항상 옳다.

<타임라인> - 마이클 크라이튼 지음

자신이 좋아하는 일을 직접 체험해본다는 건 정말 신나는 일일 것이다. 예를 들어 중세 시대를 좋아하는 사람이 기사의 갑옷을 입어본다 거나, 영화 세트장에 방문해 사진을 찍어보는 것처럼 말이다. 그런데 영화 세트장이 아니라, 만일 진짜로 과거 시대로 갈 수 있게 된다면 어떨까. 이 책은 중세 유럽에 대해 공부하던 학자와 그를 따르던 세 명의 대학원생들이 우연히 중세 유럽으로 시간 여행을 떠나게 되면서 벌어지는 모험 이야기다.

프랑스에서 14세기 유적인 옛 성터를 발굴하던 중세 역사학 교수와 대학원생들. 어느 날 교수는 이들의 발굴을 후원해주는 회사에 가느라 미국으로 출장을 갔고, 현장에는 제자들만 남아서 발굴을 계속하게 됐다. 그런데 성터에서 나온 오래된 서류 뭉치에서 교수님이 쓴 것으로 추정되는 글씨가 발견된다.

어떻게 된 일일까? 누가 장난이라도 친 것일까? 미국에 간 교수님과는 연락이 안 된다. 발굴터에서 나온 "HELP ME"라고 적힌 글씨는 분명 교수님 필체이지만, 오래된 종이에 오래된 잉크로 적힌 것이었다. 어떻게 현재의 교수님이 1357년의 서류에 몇 백 년이나 묵은 오래된 잉크로 Help me라고 쓸 수 있었던 걸까?

대학원생들은 자신들의 발굴을 후원해주던 회사 사장이 실은 시간 여행에 미쳐있었고, 그가 양자 물리학을 이용해서 시간 여행 기계를 발명했다는 사실을 알게 된다. 교수님은 그 기계를 통해 1357년으로 떠났지만 뭔가가 잘못돼서 돌아오지 못하고, 이들에게 글씨로 SOS를 보냈던 것이었다. 이제 이들은 14세기 과거에 갇혀 돌아오지 못하고 있는 교수님을 구하러 가기로 한다.

중세 유럽을 공부하고 좋아하던 이들 대학원생들은 기쁘고 들뜬 마음으로 시간 여행을 준비하게 된다. 중세 유럽어도 유창하게 구사할 수 있고, 당시의 문화나 풍습에 대해서도 모두 꿰뚫고 있는 전문가들이니 아무 문제도 없을 것이라고 생각하면서.
정말 그럴까?

스타워즈를 광적으로 좋아하는 사람이 다스 베이더와 만날 수 있게 된다면 상상만 해도 황홀할 것이다. 하지만, 정말로 광선검을 든 다스 베이더와 사활을 건 결투를 하게 된다면 제 아무리 스타워즈 덕후라 하더라도 오금이 저리지 않을까? 이들도 곧 자신들이 도착한 곳이 책으로만 공부하던 것과는 다른 ‘현실’이라는 걸 깨닫게 된다. 그리고 그 순간부터 이들의 모험 이야기가 급물살을 타게 된다.

내용은 상당히 재미있다. 처음 도입부 부분은 전체 이야기의 큰 그림을 그리느라 좀 지루하게 느껴질 수도 있지만, 대학 교수와 대학원생들의 발굴 이야기가 나오는 부분부터는 이야기가 막힘없이 흘러간다. 총 2권으로 되어 있는데 읽다보면 절대로 길다는 느낌이 안 든다. 내용도 정말 그럴 듯해서, 과학적 사실과 픽션을 잘 버무려내는 마이클 크라이튼의 역량이 고스란히 드러나는 작품이다. 작가가 얼마나 심혈을 기울여서 썼는지는 책 뒤에 실려있는 참고도서 목록만 봐도 알 수 있다. 거의 90여 권이나 되는데 대부분이 중세시기의 의복, 음식, 전쟁 등에 대한 책들과 양자역학 이론에 관한 과학서적들이었다.

저자는 <쥐라기 공원>, <스피어>, <콩고> 등의 베스트셀러로 유명한 마이클 크라이튼이다. 탄탄한 스토리와 흥미진진한 전개가 특징이어서 그의 책들은 영화로 만들어진 경우가 많은데, 이 책 <타임라인>도 역시 2003년에 영화로 제작되었다. 하지만 영화보다 책을 더 추천하고 싶다. 만일 시간여행과 액션을 좋아한다면, <쥐라기 공원>류의 과학과 픽션이 잘 섞인 소설을 좋아한다면 필시 이 소설도 좋아할 거라고 생각한다.

참고) 본문에 ‘시간 여행'이라고 쓰긴 했지만, 정확히 말하자면 이 책에서 일어나는 일은 시간 여행이 아니다, 라고 책에서 설명하고 있다. 이 세상에는 우리가 살고 있는 우주 말고도 무한대로 많은 우주가 있다. 그걸 과학용어로 ‘다중우주(multiverse)’라고 한다. 이렇게 우주가 많다 보니 어떤 우주들은 우리가 알고 있는 우주와 영 딴판인 곳도 있고, 어떤 우주들은 우리가 살고 있는 우주와 약간만 다를 뿐 굉장히 흡사한 곳도 있다. 그리고 그 우주들 중에는 우리의 과거 모습을 하고 있는 우주도 있다. 이 책에서는 '다중우주' 이론을 차용해서, 주인공들이 시간 여행을 하는 것이 아니라 '14세기의 모습을 하고 있는 다른 우주'로 떠나는 거라고 설정하고 있다.

Time travel, action, suspense. What do you want more?

“Timeline” by Michael Crichton

How exciting it is to experience things you adore very much. If you’re a Middle-Age fanatic, you’re more than happy to wear a chainmail of a knight or visit a movie set taking pictures away. But what if it’s not a movie set that you’re visiting? What if, instead of taking pictures of yourself wearing fake costumes, you could actually go into ‘history’ and experience it? Wouldn’t it be great? In this book, a professor and three graduate students who are experts on Middle Ages are ready to embark on a time travel to 14th century.

The professor and graduate students were excavating an old castle site in France. One day the professor went to America to meet the CEO of a company that was a major sponsor of their excavation. Remained at the castle site, the graduate students excavated some old documents. On the document, there was a mysterious note written in the professor’s handwriting:

HELP ME 1357

What is this? They couldn’t reach the professor, who was supposed to be in America. It was definitely the professor’s handwriting, but it was written on the old paper with an old ink - more than several hundred years old. How could this be possible? What has happened? Their professor, who specializes in 14th century, has actually gone to... well, 14th century?

The graduate students soon found out that the CEO of the company that sponsored their excavation was crazy about time travel, and that he had invented a kind of Time Machine thanks to quantum physics. Something must have gone wrong after the professor went to the year 1357, so now he was trapped in the past, sending SOS by writing on a scroll of paper that he was sure the graduate students would discover from the excavation site.

Now the graduate students have one single mission: go get the professor - from 1357. They go, find the professor, and come back - It would be that simple, right? They're experts. They're the best. They know the time and the place more than anyone else in the world. So what could go wrong? Apparently, so many.

If a Star Wars fanatic could meet the real Darth Vader, he would be thrilled. But if he were to duel with real Darth Vader wielding a deadly lightsaber, he would be frightened to death. Sometimes what you know in your head doesn't quite match what happen in reality. Now their knowledge and expertise are challenged by the 'real world'.

They're not reading some history books in the library any more. They're in the history now.

This is a very interesting and plausible story. You might find it a little loose and boring at the beginning, where the author explains the big picture of the story. But once you get to the professor and graduate students part, the story just unfolds itself.

This book has a list of 90 or so books at the end for reference. Which were mostly Middle-Age costumes, food, wars and quantum physics. Just by looking at the list, you could guess how accurate and detailed the story is.

This was written by Michael Crichton, who also wrote Jurassic Park, Sphere, and Congo. Since his books are well-written and have a wonderful storyline, they’re often remade into movies. A movie “Timeline” based on this book was released in 2003. Personally, I would recommend the book rather than the movie. If you like time travel and action, if you enjoy SF novels, I want to recommend this book.

note) Even though I mentioned ‘time travel’ earlier several times, this story is not about time travel literally. Time travel is impossible, this book says. It says there are lots of universes in the world, which is called 'multiverse'. Some are similar to ours. Others very different from.
Some multiverses are almost identical to ours, only with small differences. And some of them resembles the past of ours. This book cleverly borrowed this ‘multiverse’ theory. It insists that they travel to 'the other universe' - or other multiverse - where it’s almost identical to ours except it's in their 14th century.
