THE EKOMBI DANCE
Dance is a step-by-step movement that is made to music. People usually dance for pleasure, occasion, or happiness. It has been noticed that it relieves pressure or tension, and it helps activate a happy mood, no wonder it has been in existence since ancient times. For example, the ancient Kings usually had dancers in their palaces to help them be happy and forget about some problems, Herod Antipas fits this scenario, on his birthday, a girl danced for the occasion, and she was known to be the Herodias.
In this context, I will be sharing one of the ancient dances, the EKOMBI dance. You may wonder what is Ekombi dance. So at this juncture, I will be telling you about the Ekombi dance.
THE EKOMBI DANCE
Ekombi dance is an ancient dance by the Ibibio tribe in Akwa Ibom state, Nigeria. Do you want to know another tribe that used to dance the ekombi? The cross-riverian, are people from cross-river. The two tribes are believed to come from the same origin.
It is believed that the ancient occupation of the Ibibio tribe manipulated the moves of the Ekombi dance, that is fishing.
The Ekombi dance steps are copied from the movement of the waves of the sea, you see, the dance movement is circular.
So the Ibibio tribe performs this dance on some special occasions. In traditional marriages, the brides would be asked to dance the Ekombi dance to attest to how soft their waists are, it is funny 😄, right? If you attend one of the occasions you will enjoy it, and you will have a lot of laughter. Even some family heads would have their children stand before them after dinner to perform the Ekombi dance, my dad did this to us and it was always fun.
When performing on special occasions, the Ekombi dancers are usually in costumes, these are the traditional wears. They will tie wrappers and other costumes. The dance is said to signify peace and happiness. Now have a look at the dance here;
