I Dream Theater sono una band Metal progressive Americana ed è attiva da oltre 33 anni.
Assieme ai Queensryche e Redemption rappresentano il meglio del Metal prog, il gruppo è formato dal vocalist James LaBrie del chitarrista John Petrucci, Mike Portnoy ex batterista storico ha lasciato la band ed al suo posto ora c’è Mike Mangini, al basso troviamo John Myung, Jordan Rudess è il tastierista.
La prima cosa che notiamo nell’ascoltarli è la grande tecnica e non per niente vengono spesso accostati a livello tecnico ai mitici Yes o agli Emerson Like & Palmer gruppi storici nel mondo progressive.
Io rimasi stupito già al primo ascolto, amante del rock prog ho subito intravisto influenze di gruppi del passato, ma il loro punto di forza e la personalità e la potenza che riescono a sprigionare, questo specie nei concerti dove sono davvero impressionanti, dicevo del loro tecnicismo, ci sono brani davvero unici, tutti sono concordi, dai mass media ai critici musicali nell'affermare che hanno una tecnica difficile da copiare, per gli esperti del mondo prog posso dire che hanno dei passaggi i cosiddetti “fuoritempo” che solo i Rush erano in grado di fare”.
Stupende le tastiere di Rudess che spesso ci riporta al sound Genesiano come anche fantastiche le percussioni di Portnoy considerato uno dei 3 più grandi batteristi dell’ultimo ventennio.
Tra i loro capolavori vi segnalo “Awake” del 1994 da ascoltare i brani Voices ed Erotomania, altra chicca è “Metropolis Pt.2 Scenes from a Memory” del 1999 un disco molto pinkfloydiano, ma parlando di Pink Floyd il disco che più si avvicina alla loro psichedelia è sicuramente “Octavarium” uscito nel 2005, la traccia che da appunto il titolo al CD della durata di ben 24 minuti è in omaggio alla musica, in questo brano si riscopre un po’ la storia del rock ed il finale è un epopea dove non possiamo non rivivere i fasti dei grandi Pink Floyd e secondo me ci sono riusciti alla grande nell'intento.
A questo punto non mi resta che farveli ascoltare, il brano in questione sono 24 minuti di pura follia, come la follia dei Dream Theater !.

Beautiful Rudess keyboards that often brings us back to Genesis as well as fantastic percussion of Portnoy considered one of the 3 greatest drummers of the last twenty years.
