My sketchbook - #3 Hare 🐰

Si racconta che in tempi lontani una volpe, una scimmia e una lepre fossero grandi amici. Giocavano insieme, correvano e condividevano tutto. Il Re del Cielo quando scoprì questa curiosa amicizia tra creature così diverse decise di verificarla e nelle sembianze di un vecchio affamato si recò nella foresta. La volpe e la scimmia si misero subito a cercare frutta e altro sperando in una ricompensa mentre la lepre, non sapendo cosa cercare, continuò a giocare. Vedendola così spensierata, i due amici la incaricarono di cercare dei rami, di ammucchiarli e di accendere un fuoco. Così la lepre fece, ma appena fu acceso, la scimmia e la volpe la spinsero tra le fiamme pronti a cucinarla per il vecchio. Il dio inorridito di fronte a questo gesto sleale, decise di salvare la lepre portandola con sé sulla Luna e regalandole la vita eterna.

Questa è la versione giapponese della leggenda nel racconto del maestro zen Ryokan ^.^

[ENG] This small but very fast animal is protagonist of many stories and legends, especially in the East.

The story I thought to tell you about today talks about friendship, loyalty and betrayal and is the tale of how the hare appeared on the moon. In fact, in the East, unlike us, she sees on the near side of the moon. Can you see her?

It is said that in ancient times a fox, a monkey and a rabbit were great friends. They played together, ran and shared everything. The King of the Sky when he discovered this friendship between such different creatures decided to test it and in the likeness of an old hungry man he went into the forest. The fox and the monkey began looking for fruits hoping for a reward while the hare, not knowing what to look for, he continued to play. Seeing her so carefree, the two friends commissioned her finding branches, of a pile and start a fire. So the hare did, but as soon as it was turned on, the fox and the monkey pushed her into the fire ready to cook for the old man. The god horrified by this disloyal gesture, decided to save the hare bringing it with him to the Moon and giving eternal life.

This is the Japanese version of the legend in the story of the master Zen Ryokan ^.^
