South Island of New Zealand

Hello fellow Steemians, really excited to meet you all and to become a part of this great community. My name is Sean and I am from New Zealand. I have been on Steemit for a couple of months now, so not completely new here.

About Me

Pretty typical middle-class New Zealand upbringing, after some time I found myself graduating university with a masters degree in psychology. Then realised what I really wanted to do was backpack around the world. Which I did, for rather a long period. Eventually I came (inevitably?) to teaching English overseas, the final resting place for a lot of slightly aimless university educated male Westerners.

Currently I’m no longer teaching, instead I’m doing some voice acting work (ESL textbooks, some advertising and marketing), and freelance writing.

A Little About my Country

I would like to tell you a story about New Zealand. It illustrates a few things about our country, our culture, and our slightly strange sense of humor!

Once upon a time there was a sheep called Shrek. He was a very smart and handsome sheep. He was the leader of a large flock of sheep in the South Island of New Zealand. Shrek was a wool sheep. As a wool sheep, every year the farmer would gather all the sheep and shave them so that he could sell the lovely soft wool. Unfortunately, the South Island of New Zealand can be a rather cold place, particularly after you have just had a full body shave.

This would never do thought Shrek. And so it came to pass that every time the farmer came to round up the sheep, Shrek would leave his flock to mill around aimlessly, and go and hide in a cave. He managed to successfully avoid the farmer for six years. After which time he looked like this:

Shrek became world-famous, and now even has his own Wikipedia page

From this story you can understand a few things about New Zealand; we are a small country with not many people (around 4 million) and a lot of sheep (around 60 million). We don’t often do much to make the world news. We are a peaceful country with some really beautiful scenery. Here are a few samples.

This was the only time on the trek that my horse(the black one) wanted to walk in line

We like to joke about ourselves in quite a deadpan way- people not familiar with the New Zealand sense of humour will often think that we are serious even when making some quite ridiculous statements. This has got me in trouble a couple of times.

Community

One of the many great things about the internet is the opportunity it gives us to find a community of like-minded people. I think we are set to see some truly amazing things happen over the next decade, particularly in the areas of artificial intelligence and blockchains.

Interests

Travelling, but I think there are already a lot of great travel bloggers out there. Taking care of our ginger cat, his goal is to drop down under 8 kg this year.

Since my undergraduate degree I have always been really interested in the mind and how little we understand about it. You will see that in the topics I write about. From Tim Urban’s great blog Wait but Why and the book Super Intelligence by Nick Bostrom I have become a little obsessed with artificial intelligence. AI draws most of its inspiration from our own minds so I also keep up with recent theories about how our brains work. I want to write about advances in these areas and what’s on the horizon in a way that people new to the topic would understand and find interesting. I would like to draw people’s attention to some the things that are going on, so I will have to polish up on my blogging skills to write something readable. )

Thanks very much

woww ,, incredibly beautiful scenery ,, if only I could get there, I'll take a boyfriend

You are very very welcome to come:)

Welcome on board, a great intro. Even not a new born :)

Ha yeah not quite newborn. It’s like the 22-year-old who still plays in the high school football team.

Oh, awesome. Nice to know you, @flytingkiwi.. 😁

Hello, Sean.
What a beautiful place for living!
You're lucky! One day i'll visit your country!)

Hope to see you here one day!

Hope to see you here one day!

You let it be known that if they have a sense of humor, you've made me laugh a lot with shrek. They are quite beautiful landscapes, although I don't know if I can survive such a cold climate, if I'm sure I'll go out and look for shrek who has enough wool to make me a coat and not freeze me. You say you have visited many countries, have you come to Venezuela?

Yeah Shrek has always been one of my favorite New Zealand stories. If you come to New Zealand in February or March you will probably survive the cold, but you will have to share New Zealand with a lot of tourists. I have actually been planning a trip to South America, I will have to work on my Spanish though!

If you want I can help you with your Spanish and you can help me with my English :) . Nothing I would like more than to go to your land and enjoy its beautiful landscapes, I have always dreamed of touring the world, unfortunately my father died a few months after I was born, so it has cost me to get ahead, in short I am poor and I am in a country in crisis. But I do not lose hope of knowing the world and if God allows me to visit your land, thank you for the information about the months I can go!!

That's an amazing waterfall you have in your introduction post. I will go to South America, probably near the end of this year. Let's stay in touch, it would be great to have a friend there.

There are many beautiful places here in my land. Of course, you're always welcome here.!!

Hello, nice to meet you :)

thanks, you too

Hello Friend! I like what you write about, let's be friends and exchange more info

One helluva cat!

Yeah he's got personality

Hi Sean,

A belated welcome to the platform (from someone who has been on here a much shorter time that you). This post has me curious to check out the rest of your blog.

Cheers,
James

PS: Love that sheep, btw...

Yeah Shrek is(was) awesome. Really very unusual behavior for a sheep. They are bred to be as stupid as possible, so he slipped through somehow

Hi Sean,

I am a newbie here and I find your introduction very interesting. I have a sister who is living there with her 2 daughters and they too have a cat.

Welcome!!

Your sister is also in NZ? Welcome to Steemit to you too

Yes, in Whangarei

A good place to avoid the cold winters

Welcome to STEEM community...

Happy to be here

Amazing pictures! Thanks for sharing a glimpse from the other side of the world. And the sheep. And the cat. Please keep us updated on his weight-loss goals. :)

Its going to be a long hard road for Leo(the cat). While need a serious reassessment of life goals

er will* need

Hey cool, we have overlapping interests! Wait but Why is an amazing blog and is the main reason I started blogging in the first place. Also Nick Bostrom really opened my eyes to the existential threat of AI.

If you're interested in these topics then you'll likely like the work of 80 000 hours (in fact I think Tim mentioned them in his most recent epically long post). They are a group that try to encourage people to peruse high impact careers and make the world a better place. Here is their problem profile on positively shaping the development of artificial intelligence.

Keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing more from you in the future. Also, congratulations on making it into todays #steemstem distilled!

Excellent photo of Shrek!!!!
