Environmental Attorney/Girl with a Guy's Name- Here's my story.
HELLO! My name is Devin and I am a lawyer living in Manhattan.
I tend to shy away from elaborate social introductions--mostly because I am an introvert, but also because the legal profession, as a whole, is fairly reserved. So don't tell my boss.
Why I'm here:
My journey to becoming a cryptocurrency enthusiast started with my husband. He is a developer and dabbles in all things internet.

Anyways, my curiosity often leads to obsession, so what started out as some light Wikipedia reading soon turned into wallets, exchanges, and daily visits to coinmarketcap.com. Now, here I am making my social debut in the name of blockchains. How far I've come!
A little about me:
In a study of nature versus nurture, I'd probably be an outlier. The product of addicts, adopted, first to go to college, etc. I won't bore you with the details because I'm sure many of you have seen Lifetime movies before. However, out of that came an unshakable drive to right wrongs, if you will. A couple of degrees and lots of student loans later, I became a lawyer.
I believe people should be protected from industry irresponsibility and wrongdoing, which is why my legal career has focused primarily on environmental and mass tort litigation. I love the challenge of collective actions and the responsibility that representing hundreds of people brings. I think it is important to spread awareness, so you can expect to see lots of posts on the latest human health or environmental issue.
Don't worry though, it won’t be all business. I'm interested in everything.

Welcome, it is a very interesting phenomenon seeing so many females come to Steem because of their male relation being a cryptonerd. Apparently the social aspect gives the females an angle they feel interested or engaged with sufficiently to take the action to join. I suppose it has nothing to with earning money in your case and more about the sharing and ideological interest in where this is all headed? Or perhaps to see the human side of this community you've only previously known through digits and cryptocodes?
That is an interesting observation. For me, it is the social aspect with intelligent people. I couldn't talk about water contamination or gas leaks on facebook--no one cares. Here, however, not only are people interested they themselves have other great information to share.
I am thinking ideologically at the most generalized generative essence of what is inspiring us is that we are driven by the concept of a better result for humanity via cooperation. The monetary rewards because the money system is owned by no one so the debasement goes to the rewards instead of to the central bankers, no one owns the data on the blockchain so anyone can built a user interface on top of it, open source, degrees-of-freedom, ... on the march to what social networking should be. Unfortunately please do note that Steem was sneaky mined ("pre"-mined) about 80 - 90% for a few whales who are profiting on all of us. Some 40% of that (money supply) is controlled by Steemit Inc. and is earmarked for give away to free signups. But there are potential issues that the 40% might end up abandoned if the signup attrition rate continues at 85% at it appears to be from the steemd.com distribution data. And that still doesn't move the effect of the unfair initial distribution. Power-law distributions form in any economic system, but having 80 - 90% initially controlled by 0.1% is orders-of-magnitude worse than any natural power distribution. This is why I am both supporting Steem but also contemplating making a competitive project which is more fairly launched with other better design attributes. But I am also not sure yet, because Steem has a first mover advantage. But the actual active userbase of Steem appears be only about 5000 thus far which is microscopic in terms of social networking. See the blog post I made about the rise and fall of Ello for example. So apologies to tell you there is still some competition going on amongst us although I also want to be part of cooperative system. Today I registered the domain cooprate.com.

Your bitcointalk post makes a valid point about the name of the site. As someone who was somewhat familiar with the cryptocurrency world, I didn't think twice when signed up because anything coin-related tends to be offbeat. Based on the white paper, I think the shares themselves (steem, steem power, steem dollars) are aptly named, but "steemit" as a site name might not have been the best choice. Don't get me wrong, I get it (or at least I think I do), users are infusing their content with steem. But it does sound a bit gross now, doesn't it? My mind doesn't immediately jump to porn, but it doesn't conjure up any pleasant thoughts either.
Personally, I think the biggest turnoff is the ocean speak. People can probably get over the url, but the ever so popular whale, orca, dolphin, minnow, phytoplankton distinction is too much.
Ah yes. I wouldn't have thought of that, but I understand the point about how our cryptospeculator nerdiness is creeping in and dominating the lingo of the site, which would be weird to those not coming from our niche meme (culture).
Since you seem to not be easily offended by my incessant spamming of your blog, lol, could I ask your opinion (guessimate) of how people outside our cryptospeculator realm will react if at all about the money supply of Steem being highly controlled by a group of a few guys? And therefore that they in effect control Steem and could even hypothetically be forced to use their overwhelming stake to vote for censoring content at the blockchain level (and that they put a license on Steem that nobody can fork it which is really strange for open source projects don't normally create such lockin). Also the alleged "scamminess" of basically resembling a Pink Sheet exploration mining company where they print all the shares for themselves and try to offload these on the n00bs who are sold an ideological "to the moon" wonder story. I realize you probably don't want to criticize those who have brought us this innovation (and actually I may even want to join Dan and Ned which is one reason I am asking), but do you think others from the outside will care if this later comes to light in the newsmedia and blogs?
I presume the masses will come here to be part of some movement to better the world, because if they just wanted to blog, there is already Medium (and Facebook is even testing in-app content and could have 100 million blogging p.d.q.). And if it is to earn money, they aren't going to earn a lot of money on Steem because the math makes it impossible. Steem was designed (as admitted in the white paper) to fool the users into miscalculating their average earning power on the site. So if users are going to stay here, it is because of something they can't get on Medium (which has 30 million daily users and Steem has ~5000). I mean perhaps we can probably expect most users to end up earn a few $ per month, which is just nothing.
I am trying to determine how much this matters if it all to the masses. Some argue they won't care at all. So then why will they come to Steemit if not for an ideological reason?
Eventually Steemit may have commerce based on the STEEM etoken, and that might be a future reason, but let's assume that won't be compelling for a year or more. So I am referring to the blogging site, not future improvements which aren't certain to pan out. Excuse me I am rushing so I am not really careful with my prose.
P.S. my father was head attorney of West Coast Divison of Exxon during the Valdez spill and then later Superfund related enviromental stuff that I don't really understand. I am doing the opposite of bragging, if you get my drift.

I get your point about the demographics being populated with many intelligent people who care about bettering our world. I don't think any one person is omniscient. Via the technology of blockchains we have the potential to change the world for the better, but the technology is meaningless if it doesn't engage people. So the blockchain is both technologically empowering the freedom-of-information (no one owns it), and it is also creating a magnet for intelligent people who believe in a better world to come together.
We have to be careful with idealism as we can fool ourselves. Yet I am deep in the technology and I will tell you our ideals may be possible. Please stay with us and help us spread it mainstream. We need to make sure people won't associate cryptocurrency and blockchains with scams, which is why it is so important that we get the details correct.
Absolutely! It's unfortunate, but many people do view it as a scam. It also doesn't help that mainstream media coverage only focuses on hacks and rarely covers success. To hear you say that, though, is comforting. It means that those involved are aware of outside perception and care enough to address it.
Apology if anyone interprets that I am polluting your blog with my agenda. I just want to add one last comment that I am concerned that the name choice is not the best.
Steemit may connote a porn site to some (most?) people.
I'm contemplating that especially women would be reticent to share this name with their cause-oriented groups if they started to notice whispers. I explained my understanding of the marketing of choosing a name at the Bitcointalk forum.
