Hi Steemers, my name is Brendan van Breda based out of sunny South Africa.

I have been a member on steemit for a few months thanks to a great introduction to this platform by @chekohler. Its about time I made my first steps into getting actively posting within the community.

At present I am currently working within the software engineering field and studying towards the completion of Masters in Engineering. Through the course of the last year I found a great interest in the Science Technology Engineering and Maths movement officially know as STEM Education.

There are many who do not what this movement aims to achieve in the long term and its benefits that it will provide to our fast moving technology and innovation driven society.

My blogs aim is to provide the community with a deeper understanding of what the STEM movement entails and what is currently being done at various institutions around the world that are aiming at providing guidance to the innovators and leaders of the future.

Hello brendanvanbreda! Welcome to Steemit! Hope you'll like the community here. As a start, here are 5 tips that we believe will be helpful to you:

Keep your passwords safe: Unlike conventional sites, Steemit has 4 types of passwords. Each offers varying degrees of access to your account, so know where and when to use each of them. Also, make sure to keep them all safe and secure.
Get Steem rewards: When writing a post, you'll have the option to choose how to receive your reward: "Default 50%/50%" or "Power Up 100%". As of this moment, choosing Default 50%/50% is the better option. But this can change over time. Check our post to know more.
Upvote wisely: When upvoting, wait at least 30 minutes after the post is published to maximize your curation reward. Also, make sure not to upvote too much too fast so as not to drain your voting power.
Know your Steem, Steem Dollars and Steem Power: Steem and Steem Dollars are the 2 main currencies here. Convert and power up more Steem into Steem Power so you can have higher values on your upvotes.

Do read A thumb rule for steemit minnows - 50:100:200:25 for starter tips.

Welcome to the platform. It has it's challenges for sure but it's a great tool to have. There are many great people on here. I would suggest following a friend of mine, @crypto.piotr he has a great focus on the crypto currency side of things and does a great job of finding like minded people to collaborate. Hopefully I'll see you in the posts and comments of our mutual friend @chekohler !
