Awesome stuff I found today on the Internet!

in #internet5 years ago (edited)

I was browsing the Internet today in my free time and I found two awesome thingies. One is a service and the other one is just a piece of news that left me spooked.

notabug.io

Notabug is the response to a growing trend of censorship on Reddit.

From the maker of Ceddit (reddit uncensoring tool) now comes a decentralised peer-to-peer (p2p) version of reddit. It's open source and anyone can run a peer. It's more like BitTorrent than like a blockchain.

2018 DDoS on Github

Apparently in 2018, one of the biggest DDoS attacks ever recorded was made! It was awesome. It was a Memcached UDP reflection attack and was handled and reported by Akamai. Imagine how big their servers must be in order to handle a 13-terabits-per-second attack!

Bonus: Cryptocurrency report by the EU

I was looking for texts about the philosophy and future of fiat vs. cryptocurrency. I did not find what I was looking for, but I found a report from June 2018 called Cryptocurrencies and monetary policy. It was apparently made at the request of the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee and it discusses the official views of EU economists about cryptocurrencies.

It's not awesome, but it's really cool that I found that and it has some interesting views that challenge some of my previous perceptions about cryptocurrencies. If someone else can find the document interesting, it's my pleasure to share it.

Bonus 2: Steemit's list of censored posts

Archived version in case it gets deleted.

I had been seeing for a few days that Steemit and other similar blockchains were using similar methods to censor certain posts on the front end. I was made aware a couple of days ago that Steemit had blocked a couple of authors for spreading what was considered to be extremist misinformation. I have also found an increasing amount of posts that are not available from steemit.com, and some of them are not even available from busy.org and other much less popular front-ends (including Steempeak).

Today I found the DMCA list, which has some posts with genuine copyright violations, but I checked many of them one by one and found a big chunk of the posts that don't have any copyrighted material, which leads me to believe that the DMCA violation notices are not being checked properly and could be utilised for plain old censorship.

Alriiight, that's it! My day was super long but I had a good time reading and researching for a few hours before going to sleep. I hope you enjoyed some of what I shared, although it's a little bit sad to see that Steemit is growing accustomed to censoring its users. In a few days I may introduce an anti-censorship tool for Steem! Until then, have a safe ride!

Ok, and a song.

Sort:

The steem blockchain is the steem uncensorship tool! The only reason they have to hide a post is if the content violates u.s. copyright, contains major extremism, or leaks US government secrets so that steemit isn't breaking the law.

But anyone can still access the post directly from the blockchain and various interfaces.

How is the value of crypto volatile? Last I checked 1 BTC = 1 BTC. The problem occurs when you have to buy it with USD or any other currency.
We do not buy fiat; we earn it. The same principle can be applied to crypto. When you start buying crypto then it becomes a "volatile" asset subjected to market pressures.
