NAFTA's Gift To Trump

Trump likes to claim that the wall between America and Mexico is all his doing, but I'm afraid the foundations for the perceived need for this wall were laid in 1994, with the North American Free Trade Agreement, or NAFTA.

When will we ever learn that borders are lines drawn by violence perpetrated by the powerful in their never ending quest for more power? When the economically strong European countries of the time devised their little free trade agreement, it wasn't for the unification of the European peoples, but to facilitate the needs of European big industry, which was centered around coals and steel. The EU's precursor was the ECSC, the European Coal and Steel Community. When talking about Europe, at least if we do so based on rational thinking and a basic understanding of history, we leave out England; it never really was part of this community anyway and remained a power on itself; I dare wager, that the empire upon which the sun never sets never could let go of their special place under the sun, and to this day acts as America's right and left hand, thereby still alliancing themselves to the world's greatest power.

Follow the money. Find a problem in society, any problem almost, and you'll find an explanation by paying attention to the flow of money. That's what the EU is for, and that's what NAFTA is for; to direct the flow of goods, services, businesses and people, in a way that results in the continues flow of money to the coffers of the ones heralding these international trade-alliances. It's really that simple. Inside the EU this has led to immigration, which was actively encouraged in the 1950s, 1960s and even the 1970s, of cheap labor to the then rich western European countries, and more recently a lot of legal immigration from eastern European countries that used to be part of the "other side" of that other famous wall, the one in Berlin. On top of that the American led "war on terrorism" has added to their numbers countless refugees from northern African countries and the middle-east, leading to the totally manufactured "clash of cultures" that gave rise to the right wing populists now gaining traction all over western Europe.

In scary, but completely understandable synchronicity, the western powers on both sides of the Pacific are now under the spell of right wing populists, who claim to be able to deliver us from this so called foreign threat to our culture and our values even, totally ignoring the fact that right wing economics has created their perceived bane in the first place. Instead blaming it on left extremism, on the rose-tinted view on reality of the social justice warriors, on their irrational wish for erasing all borders, be it between countries, the sexes or cultures. Well, I'm sorry but that just doesn't compute. If you want to find out precisely why NAFTA has led to a sharp increase in both legal and illegal immigration from Mexico, go read one of the many evaluation reports that came out in 2014, on NAFTA's 20th birthday. But the gist of it is that since NAFTA, the economies of America and Mexico have essentially merged, Mexico's dependency on America has increased as almost 90% of the countries export is to America, and despite predictions of the opposite, NAFTA has worsened the position of the Mexican working class in every way imaginable. If that isn't enough to at least question the sanity of Trump's wall, than just consider the hypocrisy of it all. America didn't take over the role as the world's largest economical and military force from England by just protecting it's own borders but, like the British before them, by constantly violating the borders of everyone else. Remember why the cities in the southern part of America all have Spanish names? San Francisco, San Diego, Los Angeles... It's almost as if that southern border is a remnant of a violent invasion of some country full of... hombres with names sounding like Jesus, Pablo, Juan, Manuel..? There must be a relation there... Okay I'm sorry: I'm letting sarcasm get hold of me, which I shouldn't do. So I'll end this little rant here and would like to thank you, dear reader, for suffering through it with me. It's just that I wish that the powerful weren't so successful in their application of "divide and rule", be it through propaganda, borders or walls...
