Indian Railways sets 2030 as target to be net-zero carbon emitter

Solarises over 960 stations, place orders for 198 MW rooftop capacity to energize 550 stations more.

Indian Railways has toured more than 960 channels to date and orders placed on a solar power of 198 MW at 550 stations in operation.

It is set to produce solar energy to meet all of its energy needs for more than 33 billion units by 2030.

The use of solar energy will accelerate the work of Railways to achieve the goal of being a 'Net Zero Carbon Emission Railway' and to be 100% self-sufficient in all energy needs and to contribute to national solar goals.

Trainers had recently organized a meeting of leading solar producers to share their expectations of becoming partners in the Indian Railways journey of being a "net zero carbon emitter" before 2030.

While the current demand is 20 billion units, Indian Railways has a massive plan to install 20 GW solar power plants through their vacant land by 2030.

Some of the solarised stations are Varanasi, New Delhi, Old Delhi, Jaipur, Secunderabad, Kolkata, Guwahati, Hyderabad and Howrah.

Approximately 51,000 hectares of land are acquired through Indian Railways and are ready to add support to developers by installing solar power stations in an unoccupied Railway area.

It can be noted that the railways are also committed to achieving 100% electricity by 2023 and are committed to using solar energy to meet their gravitational needs and become a complete 'green mode'.

This is in line with the recent order of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to re-investigate railway stations and use vacant railway land for renewable energy projects.
