Today I realized that it's been a while since I wrote an article in this series. The thought came to my mind after reading an article about letting others succeed. This is a simple leadership style that Google CEO Sundar Pichai follows. After reading an article in detail about it, I was quite impressed and wanted to share my views on the same. Effective leadership is something that emerges out of unique styles in handling the team and team members. If we give the team members enough room to explore their own world with a little bit of company inclination, the results will be amazing.
Letting others succeed
True happiness for a leader is to let someone succeed and just watch. An effective leader should always be a good mentor to the team but not necessarily the brain behind the team work. If at all they need something, a leader should always be ready to mentor the team. When the team members succeed by themselves, their self confidence will increase and they will get hold of it and will try to sustain what they have been doing. A leader should always be ready to let others succeed end enjoy their success along with them. It need not necessarily be the case that leader was the absolute reason for their success. In some cases it can be true but it is not mandatory that a leader should be part of the team's success.
Remove the team's hurdles
As an effective leader, a person should always let the team members think in their own ways. The leaders should always be on top of the situation but they should not completely involve themselves. They should be a silent spectator of what the team is trying to do. If they have any hurdles in the task they are doing, an effective leader should identify those hurdles and help them run smooth. Apart from that the leaders should not do micro management especially with an effective team where the goals and objectives are clearly set. A frequent catch-up with the team members will be required to understand what they are up-to and how they are proceeding with the task. Other than that it should all be their creativity. They will definitely not fail you if you had hired the right candidates for your team.
Throw your ideas only if it is required
If a leader involves in all the team discussions and try to force his ideas on the team, it may not be very pleasant for the team members. There is a high possibility that the team members might lose control over the project and will not care anymore for the success of the project. A leader cannot be a successful person if they are unable to hold the team members accountable. The team members should not be controlled by anyone. They should be given enough freedom to think and act freely in the area they are an expert. Ideas from the leaders are welcome but only when it is required. If the team members really want to hear what the leader feels about the project and areas to improve, that is when a leader should jump in and provide their views. Even in that case a leader should think several times before they share their views and ideas to see if their ideas are really valuable for the team or not.
Usually ego is something common among the leaders of the top company where they impose their ideas and thoughts to the business and let the team members follow blindly what they think would work. There might be lots of other better solutions that can make it very simple. But just because the leader is not providing enough room for the team members to think and act wisely, it can end up in a big mess.
