Enigma ICO Warning: Beware of SCAMs and Phishing in ICOs

in #ico7 years ago

The ICOs rush-hour is here again with us. The hackers are looking for ways to get into our wallets to drain it. So, it is the game time everyone is needed to be proactive and rid ourselves of these scums of the earth.

After the pre-fork FUD that had cryptocurrency's total market capitalization jump from $66.16b on July 16, 2017, to $142.5b today Aug 22, 2017, it is understandable that most would want a piece of the action.

This week, the highly anticipated and hyped ICO of enigma had about $500,000 of investor's money stolen through a phishing scam.

This warning below could be seen on the ICO webpage:

But this is medicine after death for those that have already fallen for the scam.

How can we protect ourselves?

  • Never click on any link to our wallets. Take time to carefully type in our wallet address or use an already trusted bookmark. That may sound like a cliche, but many have lost money clicking on a masked phishing link.

  • Double-check on information seen on ICO site as sometimes the hackers may have compromised the site. So check the ICO's other channels; telegram group, twitter, etc. Do not blindly trust what you see on one channel.

  • Do not blindly trust on "presale" promo with crazy discounts, some of which is targeting your greed to overwhelm your sense of caution.

  • If sent an ether address for payment, kindly confirm on ethscan. That is the search engine for the Ethereum Block Explorer that allows users to look-up, confirm, or validate transactions with ease. If that Eth address is fake or flagged, it is seen here as flagged. For instance, this phishing eth address 0x29d7d1dd5b6f9c864d9db560d72a247c178ae86b used in the enigma scam here was flagged as compromised. Some people sent eth to the address hours after it was flagged.

  • Be patient: do not be in a hurry to buy into an ICO, especially in the pre-sale stage.

  • I would advise caution in slack channel use, the team messaging site It could be easily hijacked by phishing perpetrators. These include emails directing you send money to a particular address. If in doubt go to any of the various social media and ask for clarification.

Here is wishing everyone a successful investment on ICOs.

Good piece of advice.
The ICO waves keeps blowing away people and their crypto-currencies in a "the-more-you-look-at-your-wallet-the-less-you-see" way.

You are right.

Really informative thanks

Thank you too :)

Nawaoh! Isn't fraud corruption? Not only in Nigeria we have criminals. And many attimes people make us believe as if crime is only in Nigeria or Africa.

Good insights. Thanks!
