Thanks Troy...the woodchips create loamy humus type soil. It takes some time, but the worms and the microbbiology break down the chips and create this rich soil. In my case ,where its all hard red clay, I will eventually have rich soil to plant in. Go on youtube and search"back to eden gardening", and watch some of the videos for a much better explanation and understanding of this amazing technique.
