Around The Homestead! Have you ever seen our MASSIVE Chicken Coop?? - VIDEO!

Just the other day we got wind of yet another critter attacking our precious chickens. So a trap was set. The boys got up early and wanted to investigate but got there too late. Grandpa had already done away with the bandit.

The egg laying season is coming to a close and much of the flock is starting molt. I really enjoy my eggs in the winter time. Eggs are a humid summer morning are just not as good in my opinion.

This video gives you a quick look around the massive coop fortress that keeps our chickens safe. We've never had a successful break in.

Enjoy the video!

Freelancing chickens? Hum...what can they do? Um....I got nothing! : - )
Also wanted to say if Tim disposed of the critter, would he have not shot it? And if so wouldn't you have heard the shot?

Not if it was a .22 They are not very loud.

Zak; your father-in-law Tim really knows how to do things right. You just have to love that about him. I truly admirer everything your family does. Toby

A critter in the chicken house is no joke! We had a genet taking out dozens of our young hens a couple months back. Not a single old bird. Not a single rooster. My husband secured the seemingly already impenetrable hen house but sadly he had to kill the genet. They don't kill to eat. They kill for sport. We lost 2/3 of our hens.

Blessed Shabbat to you and all your family

Gotta love that racoon re-location device! Our chicken fort Knox looks similar to yours, only we added an "air-lock". A way of keeping our dogs and cats from entering the coop when we go in to work. Our dogs love fresh chicken too!

I had houdini chickens, but even they may not have been able to escape the Fort Knox Coop. Carry on!

Do you preserve your eggs for the winter? We don’t have anything fancy for our chickens other than a fence around the coop. Our dog won’t let anything else live in our yard. The trick is to make sure the dog doesn’t get the chickens..

Im hoping that Jaimie will make some pickled eggs. But the chickens are beginning to molt. Around here, you train a dog to not kill chickens by letting the dog kill one and then tie the dead chicken around the dogs neck until it rots off. The dog will never kill another chicken. Lots of people say it works.

Pickled eggs? Do they taste good?? I’ve seen some that preserve their eggs in lime. That’s what I plan on trying once we reach that point.
Oh.My! Well, I haven’t heard of that method before. If he ever gets himself into trouble, we’ll give that a try.
