Thank you for the facts and tips! I don't have to worry about bear but I have thought about what i'm going to do about the smaller predator. Electric it is.
If you don't have bear you next biggest nuisance (in my opinion , besides different insects) is mice!
We do have field mice and voles.
Some people use hardware cloth to keep them out of the hive but it's mostly in the winter that they are a threat around here. I would assume that during the summer (and your weather) the bees do a fine job of driving them off.
