The Storm and the Fence Chargers

Puddles crop June 2018.jpg

We had a bad series of thunderstorms come through last night. Tornado warnings were issued just south of us. This is a new phenomenon here, having tornados every year in New England. This puddle filled the whole driveway last night.

Trying to repair fence chargers….

The storms started around 5PM and went on until just after 1AM. But around 8PM we took a lightning hit somewhere on the property and it ran down the electric fences and took out the fence chargers.

Fencing catalogs with charger prices…

As fence chargers sufficient for our property are at least $300, my husband has been trying to resurrect at least one. We are using a neighbor’s spare for the moment.

The fencing companies offer a galvanized lightning diverter but they say “Reduces risk of lightning damaging an energizer.” So not a sure thing.

At the time last night we didn’t want to unplug the chargers as the pigs and cows are newly here. We have a standard practice of unplugging anything we don’t want damaged by lightning every time a storm comes through.

I hope he can fix one, as we definitely don’t have $300 to spare.

Bugger!!!! Hope you can fix it! Sounds like a helluva storm..

It was, several of them. But that sort of thing is becoming more common around here, as I guess extreme weather is everywhere...

Fortunately, he was able to get the expensive charger working again. He still has the 2 in the photo to work on. He had to order a capacitor for the red one, it's so old that's what it used!

Sorry for you luck. Hope you can make the best of it.

He was able to get 3 of them running. One was so old it needed a capacitor, which he found on e-bay. Waiting for it to arrive... So it wasn't as bad as he thought.
