A moderately survivable day

in #homesteading5 years ago

We got a half inch of rain today, but most of it was before I went up to milk. The rest of the day has been pretty dry, which was actually nice, since I had to do a ludicrously complicated fence move. It would have been day-drinking funny if it had also been raining. I was too involved in trying to actually move the fence to take any pictures, so I will take some tomorrow and try to convey how ridiculous the whole situation was.

Aside from the fence move, the day has been relatively mellow, apart from the fact that the puppies woke me up at three this morning because they were crashing and banging and knocking things over, and I couldn't go back to sleep. So there's sleep deprivation. I went to check on the goats whose fence I moved yesterday. They were napping when I arrived and seemed groggy and confused when I popped my head into the trailer.

Leonard is always on the alert. I think he's in charge of the herd since the buck is in the other trailer right now. Toaster is never in charge; he's the little sweetheart who just waits for me to show up every day and hug him.

After checking on the goats, I wandered to the other side of the property to collect some more comfrey leaves, and found that the bumblebees were pretty happy that the plants were blooming.

Once the fence move was done, we stopped in to visit Bear, since my son is visiting again and was pretty sad to hear that Bear had moved out. My friends were out of town at a wedding, but I'm at their house every few days anyway and their dogs love me and are never upset when I show up out of the blue. I was surprised to see how excited Bear was to see Trixie, our big cranky old dog.

We took a little walk around the property to keep the puppies entertained and hopefully inspire them to sleep until their people get home.

This one got Flip in full bark mode.

This is Beenie, the 15 year old border collie. She is mostly deaf and has terrible arthritis, but still has to come see what's going on.

Her people are thinking this might be her last summer, and I am very sad to even have to think about it. I love Beenie like she was my own dog. I have spent so much time at her house that I can't even imagine it without her there.

This is another attempt by Bear to make Trixie love him. She is still pretty vehemently anti-puppy, but I am betting that she will soften as the little ones grow up and become less annoying. I am not betting actual money, to be clear. She might just resent them forever.

Here's a shot of my friend's milk goats. One of them is aircraft carrier pregnant. She is the black one in the left of the picture. She should deliver within a week or so. I have been present when most of these girls have delivered over the years. The one with the silver ears in the right of the picture is the mother of Carl and Leonard, for those of you who were following my Meet the Goats posts.

I apologize if this post seems rambling and incoherent. I have been trying to write it for three hours, but I keep getting interrupted by mammals, both four footed and two footed. Some days are like that!

Love your animal photos and stories. But being an old guy I can't remember all their names. And boy there are a lot of names... :-) Keep these beautiful posts coming...

Thank you! I know it's a lot of names. I can't keep your cats straight either! Maybe I should make goat trading cards. Haha!

Hello...!!!!! :D
@goat-girlz
I seem to be getting behind in catching up with your post 😞.
Wow... you are definitely ahead of me..in the growing season. My comfrey is up but still away to go before it flowers. The pollinators love it. It's great medicinally. I look fwd to the peonies flowering. They are coming along. I love to pick a few.
Bear is getting big..😯..!!
❤❤Beenie....!!!!

I'm behind on almost everything! I keep missing people's posts too. I don't spend as much time at the computer when the days get longer. My peonies are up but not blooming yet. The one I posted was my friend's. She lives only a few miles from me but she has all the sun!

I love peonies!
Everything else is good, but that's what made me comment. :-)
In a couple more days, we may get back to spring.
