Summer Garden Update - Photo-report from our Vegetable Garden

in #homesteading6 years ago

Recently I visited our vegetable garden. Our plot of land intended for the garden is outside the city and we have to spend a little over an hour to get there by public transport, so I do not visit it as often as I'd like.
This creates certain difficulties with watering plants, combating weeds or insects. One can even say that our plants are left on their own... But at the same time they manage to survive, and even please us with a harvest.

Well, I have to say, a lot has changed in a week while I was not there.
Positive changes - our first tomatoes at last began to ripen.

Here they are! A whole bucket of tomatoes of different shapes, colors and sizes.

Cauliflower is also ready for harvesting.
When transplanting seedlings, I accidentally catched one plant from a neighboring row, and now we have one foreigner, a representative of a headed cabbage among the Cauliflower.

Most of our headed cabbages feels OK, except for two heads

The unexpected watering after a long drought caused her to crack. Not very cute, but still edible. Go to mommy, I'll chop you into a salad.

My delicious and beautiful cucumbers were destroyed by aphids. I will not show you this sad sight:-(((

We planted new ones instead of them in the hope that they will have time to mature before the autumn frosts. Will see...

Sweet pepper is almost ripe, it remains a little wait until it shows its color - yellow or red

After the complete destroying our cucumbers, aphids appeared on peppers too, but here are seen a few ladybirds. Did you know that they are fighting aphids by eating it?

In addition to vegetables, we grow some spices and aroma herbs on the vegetable garden. They are also ready for harvesting.

Here they are:
Coriander (also known as cilantro or Chinese parsley)

Green onions

Strange bush of raspberries, which pleases us with berries the whole summer

And of course, what would be a garden without flowers?
You've already seen my calendula plant growing next to cauliflower... and perhaps even noticed a tall mallow bush that is growing behind a raspberry branch...
but that's not all:-)

and a few more flowers to cheer up;-)))

@erikaflynn Thank you for not using bidbots on this post and also using the #nobidbot tag!

Oh, @transparencybot! I see you was flagged almost to death:(

Your garden looks great for being left on it´s own some days! I have some tips to help when you can´t be there in the garden. 1) Re-use your old bottles (glass or plastic) by filling them up with water and then quickly turn them over and push the bottle neck and opening into the ground by your plant. This will water the plant slowly over several days. 2) Aphids hate soap and chrysanthemum plants. Plant chrysanthemum in with your other plants to keep away aphids and other bugs, you should be able to get chrysanthemum seeds. Also, mix up a spoonful of dish soap in a bottle of water and spray over your plants. Good luck with the new cucumbers!

Thank you for these useful tips.
The idea of drip irrigation with the help of used bottles is just super! Cheap and easy. These are the things that you always have plenty at home. I think it should be something looking like this:

I definitely should try your method on my sweet peppers and onions.

Aphids is a sad story. Last year I tried everything I could: soap, soda, bitter pepper, ash, mustard powders and even chemical agents, but nothing helped. I was left without cucumbers, zucchini, watermelons, fennel and black currant... Real destroyers...

The only remedy that really helped is the soda ash + wood ash + water. I tried it this summer and it works. But the main difficulty is that aphids live on the underside of the leaf and you have to manually turn each leaf for spraying. In addition, the treatment should be repeated every couple of days, otherwise the aphids will appear again. It's hard to do when you live far from your garden.
Chrysanthemum? Maybe... This does not require much labor. My mother have a few chrysanthemum plants on her courtyard.

Thanks again for you good advices:)

Those bottles look neat, what do you think are on the pour spouts? The biggest problem i have is getting the to into the ground but that image looks so easy. As for aphids they are terrible little things. I will have to try the soda wood ash combo. This year our rose bushes were overrun with aphids. We used the hot pepper, garlic, and onion spray, but the chrysanthemum was the most effective. The natural oil in the leaves aggravates the aphids and they flee the area.

I found them on Aliexpress, but the price seems to me to be overvalued. $3,45 for 10 such cones

Perhaps it will be easier to make a few small holes in the bottom of the bottle and just put it on the ground without turning upside down

Perhaps we could try making our own cones? I use glass bottles because they aren't hard to get into the ground being firm enough material. You could try just leaving the bottles qith holea in the bottom let me know if tbat works. I am currently installing a solar system that will turn on with the sun and stop in the evening. 😆

Posted using Partiko Android
