CHARACTERS OF THE FARM - Episode 2 - Large Ducks in Goat Run

in #homesteading6 years ago

Yesterday in this series we met Fawn and Cali the Goats. Today in Episode 2 please meet The Large Ducks!

Actually there are a couple other large ducks on the farm, but for this episode we’ll focus on the 5 that live with the goats. The goat run was built to give the goats a safe place to live surrounded by fences to deter the coyotes. At some point we decided to put 5 large breed ducks in with them. They get along just fine.

see the ducks in the background getting along fine? Lol

The five ducks include three Indian Runner ducks and two Rouen ducks. The Rouen ducks are the oldest ducks on the farm. In fact, the very first duck that we got when we moved to the farm is Sunflower. She still is alive and well, kickin’ it with the goats!

after choosing this pic my daughter informed me that this duck up front is NOT Sunflower.... sheesh. Oh well, Ducky and Sunflower look very similar

Out of all the ducks on the farm, these are my favorite. They are not the prettiest ducks in my opinion (we’ll talk about the Australian Spotted Ducks later) but the Runners have a lot of character! They are very upright ducks. We laugh and joke about them looking like small men with no arms! LOL (hey wait… that wouldn’t actually be very funny if it were true)

The Rouen and Runners are both great egg layers. Rouen ducks lay a large, very light cream colored egg. The Runners lay an egg that is about the same size, but is more of a light greenish / blueish color. We love duck eggs to include in baked goods since they are more creamy and fatty compared to the chicken eggs. It’s also interesting that the duck eggs have a very matte dull surface compared to the slightly shiny or glossier surface of a chicken egg.

I did mention the Australian Spotted Ducks earlier. They are smaller, more pretty birds. We’ll meet them tomorrow. Until then, have fun on the farm!

Those are some nice looking ducks! Sharing to twitter..

It's nice to see you introducing the critters that I've seen so often in your YouTube videos. I'm a big lover of duck eggs too, yum yum.
