2 Minutes with the Farmer Vlog #106: Rotational Grazing Tutorial

in #homesteading6 years ago

Today on 2 Minutes with the Farmer we are going to give you a tutorial on rotational grazing our cattle herd. We use rotational grazing practices here on our farm for our cattle and goat herds. This allows the livestock to have access to new fresh grass on a regular basis and helps to give our pastures rest to grow new grow.

Thank you for spending 2 Minutes with me!

Do you think having cows for a beginner homesteader is a good idea? With maintaining the grass and making sure the herd is healthy, it’s quite a task. I think I’ll start with chickens.

If you have the space I would go for cows or goats. They are some work but well worth it.

The cows looked very happy to be moved on to the new pasture! It is a good idea that way you are preventing disease and taking care of your land too. I just shake my head at what I see here. Farmers have a way too many cows for spaces that are too small (perhaps 25 or 30 cows on less than 1/4 acre, smaller than a feedlot) with the animals standing knee deep in their own manure overnight. In the morning they are allowed to roam frr along the highways...

Wow that is crazy.

howdy @bowentroyer! thanks for the video. hey I thought Thursdays were silver hunt day! anyway, grass farmers huh? sounded strange until I thought about it but that's true! bless you guys!

Thank you guys. My wife came up with the grass farmer thing. She says I spent more time thinking and worrying about the grass than anything.

We have the half dollars on the table just been too busy to look through them. Hopefully Friday we will get to them. Thanks for watching and your encouragement

you guys both make it so fun and interesting to watch that..it becomes addictive! but a healthy addiction! God bless you all and Kentucky!

Thank you sir!

We have been doing the same thing these last several years. It has really been helping us to reduce the worms and limit the amount of things we have to put in our cattle.

I totally agree

Your fields are looking very healthy. Do you rotate the goats into the same fields?
We are planning to rotational graze ourself once we have our fences all up. We have been tying to decide our time frame. A week sounds good.

Thank you. We really like the rotational grazing. Hope it works great for you all
