Hong Kong Snapshot (92) – Hollywood Road and Gough Street, the start of China Revolution

in #hk6 years ago (edited)

Let’s continue the story of Sun Yat-sen in Hong Kong. Sun is the founding father of modern China. He was the leader in the overthrow of the Qing dynasty which is the last imperial dynasty of China and built up modern China in 1911. He was one of the most important people in the History of China and the world. Most of his basic of the revolution was in Hong Kong. One important element was the education of Hong Kong.

Sun studied in three schools in Hong Kong. We talked about the Diocesan School and Orphanage and The Government Central School before. Today, both schools are still at the top list of HK’s schools. Now, let’s talk about the third school Sun studied in HK, and the start of his road of revolution. First of all, let’s move to Hollywood Road, the first road built in HK.

Hollywood Road already has the history of 170 years. At the 77-81 Hollywood Road, we see an old building. 100 years ago, it was the first medical school of HK. Its name was College of Medicine for Chinese. In 1887, Sun was studying medicine in Guangzhou. When he heard about the College of Medicine for Chinese, he moved to the school. There were two reasons. First, Sun found the College was in English and had a better education quality, Secondly, we had freedom of speech in HK and he could freely talk about revolution…. We can imagine Sun was a Fenqing (which means angry youth).

In the five years studies, Sun learnt medical skills and met James Cantlie, his teacher who saved his life 10 years after. We will talk about it in the next few posts. Apart from study, Sun also spend a lot of time on revolution!

Just two minutes’ walk from the College of Medicine for Chinese, we arrived Gough Street. In the 19th century, there was a shop called Yeung Yiu Kee. The shop was owned by the family of Yeung Hok-ling. Whe is Yeung Hok-ling? He is one of the Four Bandits together with Sun Yat-sen.

During the studies in College of Medicine for Chinese, he kept talking about revolution to overthrow Qing Dynasty and met two friends, Chan Siu-bak and Yau Lit. Yeung was also a supporter of revolution and met Sun in childhood. The four guys always met at Yeung Yiu Kee and discussed about the revolution. Eventually, people called them the Four Bandits. I always wonder why the Qing dynasty never sent killer to kill them. I believe that no one took it series to these four young people and the name Four Bandits was just a joke. No one can imagine that the Four Bandits formed Revive China Society and really overthrow Qing Dynasty in 20 years’ time.

Time passed and we can’t see any marks of the history now. I don’t think people will find the historical meaning of the two places. There should be plaques showcasing the history but they are under replacement so I couldn’t see any. By chance, I found a column which indicate that it is the Dr Sun Yat-sen Historical Trail. Haha you can see countless stickers on it.

People may ask why those historical marks are not preserved. The reason is simple. The marks are talking about revolution. The British HK of course didn’t want to promote it. Until 1996, one year before HK returning China, we finally have the Dr Sun Yat-sen Historical Trail. But as all Chinese know, Sun is a sensitive term. Even the HK Government won’t promote too much. So, just let these stories be hided in History!
