District Judge Arian sat in his chair with a tense expression. Over the past twenty years, he had worked on countless cases but not one like this
Criminal charge: Daniel Carter, far left, has been charged with the murder of a prominent businessman, the defendant in the case
FBI and police — evidence fingerprints at crime scene, bad cctv footage, witness statement; everything incriminated Daniel. While listening to the testimony of the key witness, a woman named Lillian, Arian noticed her nervous movements. Lillian seemed to avoid direct eye contact and often changed her answers when questioned further by the defense attorney. This anxiety weighed on Arian's mind even more.
That night, Arian reread the case documents. He noticed that the fingerprints found on the knife handle were only partial, and could have been a secondary transfer. In addition, CCTV footage showed a person who looked similar to Daniel, but was not clear enough to confirm his identity.
The next day, Arian allowed the defense attorney to call a new witness, an independent forensic officer who found evidence that additional DNA was found under the victim’s fingernails—and it did not belong to Daniel. The DNA matched that of a man named Edward Hughes, a former business partner of the victim who had recently lost a lot of money due to the victim’s business decisions.
When Edward was called to the stand, he showed signs of panic. Judge Arian, in his authority, allowed further investigation. Eventually, under pressure from the new evidence, Edward confessed to killing the victim in a fit of emotion.
Judge Arian immediately issued an order of release for Daniel and ordered the police to arrest Edward. When the gavel fell, he felt relieved. Justice had finally been served, even if it had almost fallen on the wrong person.
As he left the courtroom, Arian reflected. It was a reminder to him that the law should always side with the truth, not just the evidence that appears on the surface.
