허름한 모텔: Shabby Motel

A Good Place to Stay in Seorak-san.

To me, this is the best hotel. It's a little old and shabby, but it's comfortable. We've known the owner for over 20 years, as we keep coming back every year. I suppose we are his best customers! I'm just joking...

No, but seriously, when my husband calls up for a reservation, he doesn't even give the owner his name. He just says, "Hey, Boss. Give me a room." And everything is taken care of.

머물기에 좋은 모텔

저에게는 이 곳은 최고의 호텔인 것 같아요. 좀 낡고 초라하지만 편안해요. 우리는 매년 다시 돌아오기 때문에 20년 넘게 주인을 알고 있어요. 우리가 그의 최고의 고객인 것 같아요! 농담이죠...

아니야, 하지만 진짜로 남편이 전화를 해서 예약할 때 주인에게 이름조차 주지 않고 그냥 "사장님! 방 하나만 주세요"라고 하고 모든 일이 다 처리돼요.

Entering the Hotel

So this is what the place looks like when you first walk in. The lights are dim as if this hotel was made back in the 1970s. It definitely has a unique and antique way, which is kind of attractive to people between the ages of 30 and 50!

그러니까 처음 걸어 들어오자 이 장소가 바로 이런 곳이에요. 이 호텔이 1970년대에 만들어지 듯이조명이 어두워요. 이 곳에는 분명히 독특하고 고풍스러운 모습이 있는데, 30세에서 50세 사이의 사람들에게 참 매력이에요!

Setting

The usual setting has a piano with a telescope on top. Now that I look closer this time, he's changed the telescope into binoculars. There are also two devices and a very expensive drone. The owner drives a Porche, so this tells you how affluent he is.

평상시의 배경에는 피아노 위에 망원경이 있는거에요. 하지만 이번엔 더 가까이 보니 망원경을 쌍안경으로 바꿨네요! 또한 두 개의 장치와 엄청 비싼 드론이 있구요. 주인이 포르쉐를 몰고 다니니, 그가 얼마나 부유한지 알 수 있겠죠?ㅋㅋ

The Map & Keys

At the front desk, there is a map, and on the desk are where people keep all their door keys. We are room 202 this time.

프런트 데스크에는 지도가 있고 데스크 위에는 사람들이 모든 문 열쇠를 보관하는 곳이에요. 우리는 이번에는 202호인데요.

Wall Decorations

This hotel has a lot of weird wall decorations. A lot of them are foreign such as Coca-Cola ads from the 1940s. I guess what makes this place special is that the owner can speak fluent English. You may think, "So what? A lot of people speak fluent English in Korea."

I think this case is a little different because the owner is way over 70 years old! I'm not sure where he learned his English. But whenever we come to the hotel, he always has the English news on, and he's always watching and listening to the LAPD radio broadcast! So because he knows good English, he has a lot of foreign customers coming here to his hotel. This is another reason why he was so successful in his business.

이 호텔은 이상한 벽장식이 많아요. 1940년대 코카콜라 광고와 같은 외국 제품도 많아요. 이 곳이 왜 특별한지 알려줄게요. 주인이 영어를 유창하게 구사할 수 있다는 점인가 봐요. 여러분은 이렇게 생각할지도 몰라요. "그래서, 뭐? 한국에서는 영어를 유창하게 구사하는 사람이 많다."라고 생각할 수도 있지만....

주인이 70세가 훨씬 넘었기 때문에 상황이 좀 다르죠!ㅎㅎ 저는 이 분이 어디서 영어를 배워셨는지 잘 모르겠지만 우리가 호텔에 올 때마다, 이 분은 항상 영어 뉴스를 틀어놓고, 항상 LAPD 라디오 방송을 보고 듣고 계세요! Whoa~! 그래서 이 분은 영어를 잘 하시기 때문에, 그의 호텔에 오는 외국인 손님들이 많는 것 같네요. 이것은 사업에 성공했던 또 다른 이유인가 봐요. 70+세이면 제가 생각하기엔 대단하신 거에요.
