History of the first test cricket match

in Cric-World 🏏3 years ago

The first official cricket match was played between Australia and England. That was in 1877. The England national team came to Australia by ship to play a Test match. The match was played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground from 15th to 19th March. However, there was no deadline for Test matches at that period. The longer the game took to end, the longer the game continued. There was another peculiar rule. One over consists of four balls, not six!

Australia won the toss and elected to bat. The first ball of the first Test match was bowled by English fast bowler Alfred Shaw. Aussie opener Charles Bannerman was on the strike end. Charles Bannerman scored the first Test century. He scored 185 runs in the first innings. Even his great performance, Australia was all-out to 245 runs. Alfred Shaw took 3 wickets.

England couldn’t take such an advantage. They were all-out to 196 runs. In this innings, Aussie pacer Billy Midwinter took 5 wickets for 78 runs.

Australia's situation was more miserable in the next innings. This time Alfred Shaw took 5 wickets for 38 runs and Australia was all-out to 104 runs. England's target in the fourth innings was 154 runs.

You may have wondered that there was no spinner in that Test. No, there were spinners in the squad of both the teams. In the fourth innings Aussie spinner Tom Kendall took 7 wickets for 55 runs. England was all-out for only 108 runs. Australia won the first Test match in the history of cricket by 45 runs.
