Greetings to everybody! My name is Alena Vladi, and I am a certified interpreter and linguist. My second education is connected with music and I have always been interested in the synthesis of language and music. This is partly why I would like to start a series of classes "English with a Song".

Learning English is a long process and requires stability. Stability is perhaps the most important thing in learning a new language. But stability often implies boredom. At first, when you are just starting to learn something new, the energy goes over the edge, but with time it turns into a routine. What if we learn English by singing the songs of your favorite singers and bands? I thought.

That’s an idea. Firstly, your knowledge of English will become better. Secondly, this way you will know better how your favourite performer lives and what air he breathes. And thirdly, you will become at least a little closer to your idols. And that's cool!

Well, let's get started.. Today we only have an introductory part. But in the future, each lesson, we will take one song, translate it and analyze grammar and tense constructions. We will also study interesting phrases and expressions that are used by English speakers in colloquial speech. I know it's not easy at Steemit, where people of different nationalities have gathered and where English is used as a connecting language between people of different countries. It is clear that many people at Steemit use auto-translation, so how will we learn English in this case?

Let's do the following thing: I will translate lyrics into my native language, Russian, and give explanations in English, and if you enter these explanations into the auto-translator, you will get information about the structure of the English language, grammatical constructions and tenses in your native language.

Well, It is possible that you, inspired, will run right now to download the lyrics of your favorite songs. Today I want to give you some tips on what you should pay attention to if you decide to do it individually.

  1. Turn on the recording of the song. Try to choose a simple song with repeated parts, if your level is elementary, it's even better to take a children's song. Although many bands have songs where only a few phrases are sung.

  2. Listen to the song without looking into its lyrics. Most likely, during your first listening you will understand just a few words, but try to rely on those that you have understood. Write them down. Then listen again and add to your written words the ones you understood this time. You may need to listen several times, be patient!

  3. Download the lyrics and put the words in front of you. See how many words you managed to hear correctly. No words at all? That’s normal. We need constant practice and a little experience.

  4. Praise yourself for being such a great translator. You have made the first step! You listened thoughtfully, trying to understand the content. Your ear is not accustomed to distinguish individual phrases and expressions in the flow of speech yet. Don't get upset. This is just the beginning. With regular classes, there is always progress!

To be continued..
