Imaginarios: "La Poción de Amor", de Evelyn de Morgan [ESP / ENG]

En una copa de plata, Empusa Palatina vierte una pequeña cantidad de lo que llamaba "pócima de amor", un fuerte somnífero líquido consistente de una mezcla de hierbas que solo ella conocía. Este acto lo hacía cada vez que se ofrecía un banquete en su hogar con tal de calmar a a su marido, Publio Léntulo Ambrosio, famoso por sus celos enfermizos y su falta de control de ira.

Podría dárselo hasta con un día de anticipación, dado que el efecto de la pócima dura una semana completa, pero debía ser cuidadosa, pues si excedía las dosis, podría matarlo y ella sería castigada por semejante delito. Por lo tanto, todo debería calcularse de modo que nadie notase que Léntulo tuviera encima suyo un calmante.

Mientras tanto, en los jardines de la residencia de los Ambrosios, Julia Lentulina abrazaba felizmente a su amado, el tribuno Cneo Marcelo Galio, pues éste le había pedido matrimonio. Si bien estaba segura de que su madre estaría feliz por aquella noticia, dudaba que su padre lo recibiera con agrado a pesar de que Marcelo era hijo de un adinerado senador. El viejo Léntulo deseaba casarla con Cayo Antonio Manio, un senador famoso por su extravagancia y con conexiones directas a la familia imperial.

Ya después hablará con su madre y verá cómo podrán solucionar el asunto. Por ahora solo quería disfrutar de ese momento a solas con Marcelo.

In a silver cup, Empusa Ambrosina pours a small amount of what she called "love potion", a strong sleeping liquid consisting of a mixture of herbs known only to her. This act was done every time a banquet was held in her home, in order to calm her husband, Lentulus Ambrosius, famous for his ill jealousy and his lack of anger control.

She could give it to him up to a day in advance, since the effect of the potion lasts a full week, but she had to be careful, because if she exceeded the doses, she could kill him and she would be punished for such a crime. Therefore, everything should be calculated in such a way that no one would notice that Lentulus had a sedative on him.

Meanwhile, in the gardens of the Ambrosius residence, Julia Lentulina was happily hugging her lover, the tribune Cneus Marcellus Galius, as he had asked her to marry him. Although she was sure that her mother would be happy about that news, she doubted that her father would welcome it despite the fact that Marcellus was the son of a wealthy senator. The old Lentulus wanted to marry her to Gaius Antonius Manius, a senator famous for his extravagance and with direct connections to the imperial family.

Later she will talk to her mother and see how they can solve the matter. For now, she just wanted to enjoy that moment alone with Marcellus.

Sobre la obra

Poción de amor es una obra pictórica elaborada en 1903 por la pintora inglesa Evelyn de Morgan, una de las artistas más destacadas de la Hermandad Prerrafaelita, un movimiento artístico conformado por pintores, poetas y críticos británicos que abogaban por rescatar las distintas técnicas pictóricas empleadas por las escuelas italianas y flamencas anteriores a Rafael. La obra se encuentra actualmente en exhibición en De Morgan Centre, ubicado en el interior del museo Cannon Hall, en Barnsley, South Yorkshire, Inglaterra.

Esta obra es considerada como uno de los mejores trabajos de la artista debido al manejo sutil de la narrativa simbólica que se esconde en la figura central, la mujer de atavíos dorados. A simple vista podría tratarse de una hechicera, dado que el gato negro que la acompaña es un símbolo asociado con la maldad y la hechicería, y el paño blanco que está al lado de su asiento podría pertenecer a la joven que abraza al caballero de armadura negra, pareja ubicada en el lado derecho superior de la obra; quizás sea una mujer que buscara separar a la pareja, o quizás auxilió a uno de los dos para lograr conquistar el corazón del otro.

No obstante, si observamos con detenimiento el estante de libros, vemos que hay uno titulado Paracelsus; el libro en cuestión hace referencia al alquimista, médico y astrólogo suizo Teofrasto Paracelso, una de las figuras más destacadas en el campo de la medicina durante el Renacimiento. Esta pista es más que suficiente para darnos cuenta de que aquella "poción de amor" que preparaba posiblemente sea un brebaje de hierbas curativas en la cual la dama ha estado experimentando; quizás la pareja había acudido a verla para la cura de alguna enfermedad que le aquejaba a los cónyuges, con la creencia de que era una curandera y no una estudiante de medicina o una erudita con un conocimiento heredado por su familia.

Si nos centramos solo en la mujer, esta escena puede interpretarse como una búsqueda incesante por el conocimiento, o quizás la herencia de dicho conocimiento a partir de la transmisión generacional, simbolizado de forma eficaz en el acto de vaciar la pócima en la copa. El gato negro y la tela blanca posiblemente representen el discernimiento de lo malo (el gato) y lo bueno (la tela).

La obra se puede prestar a muchas interpretaciones por la riqueza simbólica que emanan sus elementos, pero eso ya depende de cada espectador.

On the artwork

The Love Potion is an artwork made in 1903 by the English painter Emily De Morgan, one of the most outstanding artists of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, an artistic movement formed by British painters, poets and critics who advocated the rescue of the different pictorial techniques used by the Italian and Flemish schools before Raphael. The work is currently on display at the De Morgan Centre, located inside the Cannon Hall museum, in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England.

This work is considered one of the artist's best works due to the subtle handling of the symbolic narrative that is hidden in the central figure, the woman in golden attire. At first glance she could be a sorceress, since the black cat that accompanies her is a symbol associated with evil and sorcery, and the white cloth that is next to her seat could belong to the young woman who embraces the knight in black armor, a couple located on the upper right side of the work; perhaps she is a woman who sought to separate the couple, or perhaps she helped one of the two to win the heart of the other.

However, if we look closely at the bookshelf, we see that there is one titled Paracelsus; the book in question refers to the Swiss alchemist, physician and astrologer Theophrastus Paracelsus, one of the most prominent figures in the field of medicine during the Renaissance. This clue is more than enough to realize that the "love potion" that she was preparing is possibly a concoction of healing herbs in which the lady has been experimenting; perhaps the couple had come to see her for the cure of some disease that afflicted the spouses, with the belief that she was a healer and not a medical student or a scholar with knowledge inherited from her family.

If we focus only on the woman, this scene can be interpreted as an incessant search for knowledge, or perhaps the inheritance of said knowledge through generational transmission, effectively symbolized in the act of pouring the potion into the cup. The black cat and the white cloth possibly represent the discernment of the bad (the cat) and the good (the cloth).

The work can lend itself to many interpretations due to the symbolic richness emanating from its elements, but that depends on each viewer.
