A Year With Rumi: Day 2- A Single Brushstroke Down Review

This poem to me is a paradox. I can explain it in two opposite way depending on my mood. There are times when I read the poem and feel like Rumi is trying to say we are nothing compared to this vast creation of god. But there are also times when I feel he is talking about the significance of the man's life because we are very part of that vast creation.

Rumi starts with saying that there is no point in asking proof of god's existence because it is as apparent as the light that dawns in the morning. He just ask us to trust and remember that god is wherever we are. The god never left our side because we are part of the god's creation and plan. No matter whether we are enjoying the mundanity of the life or the attaining its wisdom, we do it under his realm.

Rumi gives examples of things we do and feel in life- drunkenly asleep, tenderly awake, etc. and say in these series of events and experiences, we are nothing but a single brushstroke down. We should pay more attention when we explain this poem to the phrase a single brushstroke down because Allah in Arabic begins with a strong downward mark. This directs us to the point that Rumi is talking about us being part of the Allah written in Arabic that starts with downward mark.

As said, it is on us to feel elated being part of Allah or being sad that we are nothing on our own without Allah.
