Absurd Hour

The lictors’ bundles opened at the roadside…
The banners of medieval victories never even reached the crusades…
They placed useful folios among the stones of the barricades…
And the weeds grew on the railways, wild and harmful...
Ah, how old is this hour!... And all the ships have sailed!
On the shore, only a dead rope and scraps of sail speak
Of the Distant, of the southern hours, from where our dreams draw
That anguish of dreaming more than even they can confess to themselves...
The palace is in ruins... It pains to see in the park the abandonment
Of the fountain without its spray... No one lifts their gaze from the road
And feels nostalgia for themselves before that autumnal place...
This landscape is a manuscript with the most beautiful phrase erased...
The madwoman broke all the smooth candelabras,
Smeared the lake with humanity by scattering many torn letters...
And my soul is that light which will never again shine in the candelabras...
What do my longings, these fleeting breezes, want with the ill-omened lake?
Why do I afflict and sicken myself?… All the nymphs lay naked in the moonlight,
The sun came and they had already left...
Your silence that soothes me is the very idea of shipwreck,
And the idea of your voice sounds like the lyre of a feigned Apollo...
There are no longer any peacock tails full of eyes in the gardens of yesteryear...
Even the shadows themselves are sadder... Still,
There are traces of maidens’ dresses (it seems) on the ground, and still,
An echo of footsteps lingers down the avenue that now ends...
All the sunsets have merged into my soul...
The grasses of every meadow were fresh beneath my cold feet...
In your gaze, the idea of believing yourself calm has withered,
And seeing that in you is a harbor without ships...
