A collection of colorful architecture that puts you in a good mood

in WORLD OF XPILAR3 years ago (edited)

Recently I have started a cleanup in my folders with photos. During a period of almost fifteen years of taking photos with a digital camera it seems I have thousands...It is necessary to delete some to get more space. I have not thought about it before now, but I think I see a tendency - I like street photograpy with colorful houses! Another coincidence is that the photos are almost taken from the same angle! But they are all from different places.

Bo-Kapp in Cape Town (South-Africa)

This is a small neighborhood in the center of Cape Town. Narrow cobbled streets with low, colorful houses. They originated as a garrison for soldiers in the mid 18th century. After the emancipation of slavery, this was the area where they settled. These houses are very pretty. Bo-Kaap is one of the places not to be missed in this city. It's such a contrast to all the taller buildings in grey concrete.

Nyhavn in Copenhagen (Denmark)

Every time I have been to Copenhagen, the trip always goes to Nyhavn. It's a popular place. The narrow, colorful facades here date back to the 17th century and one of the city's oldest houses is located somewhere in this row of houses. One of the them is also the house where the famous Danish poet H.C. Andersen wrote many of his fairy tales. Nyhavn has previously been a place with a bad reputation, but today many of the gambling dens have been turned into restaurants. In the summer it is a great place to sit, but it can be difficult to get a table at one of the restaurants.

«Posebyen» in Kristiansand (Norway)

Every day when I go to work, I cross this street. Many times I stop to take photos. The mood changes according to time of day and season. This street is located in the part of town called «Posebyen», which is the oldest part of town. When this part was built a couple of hundred years ago, the houses were built of wood. Some of them are still here. Kristiansand has the largest selection of wooden houses in Northern Europe. But our city has had some major fires. The last fire was in 1882. That's when 1/3 of the houses burnt down, and instead of rebuilding in wood, they started to construct in concrete instead.

Scalloway in the Shetland Islands (Scotland)

Compare this street with the one above. The houses are similar. The Shetland islands has a history that is very much intertwined with the history of Norway. It's not strange at all. The building style, culture and language etc. have many similarities. The Vikings conquered the islands around 800 A.D. and actually were in power untill 1100. Then Scotland took over. It was amazing to see the inheritance after the Vikings. Especially all the names of streets which actually descents from the Norwegian language.

Lüderitz (Namibia)

I found a totally different style in this little town, located in southern Namibia, by the Atlantic Ocean. Most of houses are painted in different colors and in an architectural mix of German colonial style and Art Nouveau. Many names on buildings and streets are German. The town was founded when Namibia was a German colony and became prosperous town because of rich diamond finds. That is easy to see when looking at many of the houses. They testify that the inhabitants were wealthy. To find a German town in the Namib Desert was a perculiar experience!

As I will keep going through my photos, I feel quite sure I will come across more photos of colorful houses.
