Poodles are the best dogs
Honestly, they are the best dogs. Not many people know this, but the poodle is a hunting dog. They are very good at retrieving waterfowl. People often make fun of this special poodle haircut, but it has a function.
Poodles are water dogs. They are very good swimmers and they even have webbed toes to help them swim faster.
Ideally, a hunting poodle receives a close shave on his legs, body and feet. Patches of fuzzy hair shaped like pom poms are left on the shoulders, hips, and ankles. The close shave helps the dog to have freedom of movement through the water, but the fluffy pom poms serve to keep his joints warm in the cold water.
The big pom pom on the tip of the tail is there to help the hunter see where his dog is. When the dog is out swimming in the water, the tail sticks straight up.
Hunting poodles are very gentle and they carefully pick up ducks and other water fowl in their mouths. Other dogs may get over excited with a duck in their mouths and might bite down too hard. Not the poodle! The poodle knows to carefully hold the duck in his mouth without damaging it, and then swiftly swims the prize back to his waiting master.
This hunting poodle has a plain kennel cut, which is also good for hunting and everyday.
Usually, the faithful poodle is well rewarded with a special duck meat treat from the hunter.
In addition to helping people obtain food, poodles are extremely affectionate dogs. The bigger the poodle, the more loving he seems to be--especially the males. A mature standard poodle can weigh well over 100 lbs, but they believe they are lap dogs. No poodle parent is able to sit alone in a chair or have room enough in their bed because their giant poodle needs to cuddle all the time.
There are many ways to style poodle hair, and poodle really love going to the groomer for a spa day. Mostly, this is because poodles love attention and love being touched. Sometimes, poodles will have extremely fancy haircuts and the poodles LOVE it.

Poodle grooming is considered an artform and it is possible to shape a willing poodle into almost anything you can imagine. Most of them are more than willing to become the center of attention with a fabulous hair style.
Oh and they own the furniture. If you are lucky, they will let you sit in their chair.

I saw them using a poodle on the show duck dynasty, as the duck retriever they were intended to be. He was impressive!

If they make you real mad, dump a gallon of ammonia in their den, late night. It is free fertilizer, and heavier than air'!
:)>ACK! No! Haha. I actually do not mind them, but people around here hate them. I mean--they do leave holes everywhere, but I feel bad killing them. The neighbour came over last week and asked if he could set some traps along our fence line. Traps seem to be the preferred method, followed by the carcass being tossed into the 'dead things bush'. I don't even want to know what a dead things bush is, but all the locals seem to have them. :-P
I hear they make good dog food....
I have had too much damage from pests, and I've moved them to the shoot on sight list.

Those poodles that walk around the city with their owners ... these are no longer hunting dogs, unfortunately.
HAHA! They could be. All dogs, no matter what their breed or skill, must be trained to fulfill their potential. Poodles are versatile in that they can fulfill many roles.
I knew one poodle who liked to swallow tobacco smoke :)

I always thought poodles are just decorative dogs, a sweet four-legged companion with a fancy haircut... for those who like combing the pet for hours ... :)

It is true that a fancy poodle clip requires a lot of maintenance. When poodles are shown in competition, they will often have exaggerated hairstyles, but when they are at home, it is best for them to wear a comfortable kennel clip. My poodle gets a different hairstyle based on the season. In summer I keep his hair on the short side, but in winter, especially at Christmas, he gets a long and fancy clip. These days, he is wearing a "covid" clip, which means he is an overgrown mess. :-P

My head also. I measured and my scraggly hair is 24 inches long!
When I was a child poodles were my favourite dogs, but our parents were too busy with their works and we did not have pets. Reading your post I have learnt so much about these dogs, I like the idea about hunting with such dogs. But for kids perhaps playing is more important :)

Poodles are versatile and they have many talents. They can be good hunters, but they also are very loving toward their families. My poodle is very good with children and he will play with them all day.
