Organising Travel and Accommodation (Music is also Administration Work)

Sigh... being a musician can involve a whole batch of other things that aren't related to music. Of course, the lucky ones who stay put in a single group and city don't have to worry too much about this sort of thing... but being a freelancer (as most Early Music specialists are...), means that we have to juggle multiple groups, and multiple demands on where and when our physical selves are supposed to be. Of course, I guess this would work easier if I you just said "Yes" to a single thing at a time... but I still find that hard to do... as a freelancer, you feel sort of compelled to say yes to everything, and then just juggle things to make it all work. This is especially true given that I've only just recently returned, and I feel like I have to make as big of a mark whilst people are still interested!

Anyway, that means that I've got some horrific travel and accommodation puzzles that I have to work out... and I try my best to stay on top of all of it. But it does start to get quite tricky... With the flights, buses, and driving... I mostly have it sorted for this coming month. The photo above is just one section of the month where I had to deliver my travel requests to the ensemble that I'm playing with... as well as my accommodation requests.

Generally, it can be just easier to accept the regular accommodation situation, but sometimes, if you are savvy, you might be able to snatch up a cheaper accommodation/food option and pocket some of the allowance instead.

Meanwhile, you are often able to have a certain number of flights and taxi vouchers per project, and it is then a question of juggling around them to see if you can make them stretch to the most critical parts. Now, the chief problem (as I alluded to before) is the fact that I have interlocking projects and commitments in different cities... if I didn't bother with all of that, then I could just stay with a single project in a single city and just take it easy... but taking it easy isn't so much fun!

So, a good batch of driving and flying in the weeks ahead. I think I will use on of the drives to also pick up some IBC containers that we want to turn into wicker beds for growing veggies in the garden. It will be funny to show up to a concert in a noisy old ute loaded up with transport gear!

Anyway... today was a day of getting the coming two months worth of travel/accommodation bedded down and sorted. Of course, once all the requests were out, there was a change in something and that meant that I needed to fix up some requests. Sigh...

... I had hoped to get some study done as well, plus some of the invoicing/tax administration done as well (for crypto as well as for my "real job"). But that had to take second place to a bit of practice (that is my real job after all..), and a bit of gardening (can't let that lapse... or else nothing will get done... a little bit each day!).

The next few days are going to be a bit of a travel fest unfortunately, but that does mean that I should have time to hack away at the laptop when I'm moving (doing the study and admin...), and doing some practice when I'm stationary (really have to get moving on some of that, being publicly humiliated on stage isn't one of my life goals!).

A stupidly early morning flight... I will leave the car at the airport, seeing as I have to keep coming and going to the airport anyway, and it will end up being faster, more self-reliant, and cheaper than using Taxis (or even Ubers) all the time.

... oh shit.. I forgot, I have to pack a bag!
