El Halo (parte 4)

―Muchas cosas están cambiando, pronto no seremos lo que ahora somo ―dijo el almirante Olsen, mientras contemplaba la puesta de sol sentado sobre la arena ―. Las cosas no volverán a ser las mismas.

―¿A qué se refiere señor? ―preguntó el capitán Almeida de pie a su lado.

―Siéntate Oliver, no tienes que ser tan formal ―dijo el almirante ―. Me has acompañado a bordo de la Sorrento por ochenta años, y esta es la primera vez que nos dirigimos a una situación que podría ser potencialmente peligrosa para todos.

―Estoy seguro de que todo saldrá bien, nuestros sistemas de armas y defensa son inimaginablemente superiores a cualquiera conocido, incluso a los inus. Esta es la razón por la que nos hemos preparado por más de veinte mil años, siempre habíamos estado temiendo encontrar algo como esto, pero nunca había ocurrido, este es el momento que justifica nuestros esfuerzos ―dijo Almeida.

―Siempre optimista chico, pero yo no tengo tan buen ánimo, ni estoy tan confiado y tu no deberías estarlo tampoco ―dijo Olsen ―. Tú lo has dicho, este es el momento que nos justifica, pero no tenemos idea de a que nos enfrentamos. Imagina como se sintió el capitán Igor Tylor, cuando se encontraron por primera vez con los inus.

―Pero los inus son nuestros aliados ―dijo Almeida.

―Ese es el punto, hasta los inus, sólo habíamos conocido a los goei, y fueron los inus, los que nos demostraron que había civilizaciones más viejas y avanzadas que la nuestra, imagina la sorpresa y al mismo tiempo el temor que sentiría Tylor cuando se dio cuenta de esto.

―Entiendo su punto señor.

―Nos dirigimos a lo desconocido Oliver y no deberías estar tan confiado, los inus siempre fueron amistosos, pero estos, sean quienes sean, han dado grandes muestras de no serlo y no sabemos si veinticinco mil años de preparación, serán realmente suficientes como para enfrentarnos a ellos.

Olsen se puso de pie y sacudió la arena de su pantalón, estiró su espalda y apoyó su mano en el hombro de Oliver.

―El capitán Horacio fue asignado a la base de Anfitrite así que deberá dejar su nave. Te recomendé ante el parlamento ―dijo, apretando el hombro de Oliver ―. A partir de mañana estarás a cargo de la fragata Leónidas, tu servicio en la Sorrento ha llegado a su fin, es el momento de que dirijas tu propia tripulación.

―Gracias señor, no lo defraudaré.

―No tienes que decirlo muchacho, eso ya lo sé … ―Olsen retiró la mano del hombro de Oliver, y se dio la vuelta ―. GALATEA, cancela la simulación― dijo, el mar y la playa a su alrededor desaparecieron, como si se vaporizaran en una nube de pixeles que se extinguen ―. Vamos Oliver, tienes que poner todo en orden para que asumas tu mando.

The Halo (part 4)

-Many things are changing, soon we will not be what we are now, -said Admiral Olsen, as he watched the sunset sitting on the sand-. Things will never be the same again.

-What do you mean, sir - asked Captain Almeida standing beside him.

-Sit down, Oliver, you don't have to be so formal, -said the admiral-. You've been with me aboard the Sorrento for eighty years, and this is the first time we've been in a situation that could be potentially dangerous for everyone.

-I'm sure everything will be fine, our weapons and defense systems are unimaginably superior to anyone we know, even the inus. This is the reason we have been preparing for more than twenty thousand years, we have always been afraid of finding something like this, but it has never happened, this is the moment that justifies our efforts, - said Almeida.

-Always an optimist kid, but I'm not that upbeat, and I'm not that confident, and you shouldn't be either - said Olsen -. You said it, this is the moment that justifies us, but we have no idea what we are up against. Imagine how Captain Igor Tylor felt, when they first met the Inus.

-But the Inus are our allies, -said Almeida.

-That's the point, until the inus, we had only met the goei, and it was the inus, who showed us that there were civilizations older and more advanced than ours, imagine the surprise and at the same time the fear that Tylor would feel when he realized this.

-I understand your point sir.

-We are heading into the unknown Oliver and you shouldn't be so confident, the inus were always friendly, but these, whoever they are, have shown great signs of not being so and we don't know if twenty-five thousand years of preparation will really be enough to face them.

Olsen stood up and shook the sand out of his pants, stretched out his back and put his hand on Oliver's shoulder.

-Captain Horace was assigned to the Amphitrite base so he will have to leave his ship. I recommended you to the parliament, - he said, pressing on Oliver's shoulder -. As of tomorrow you will be in charge of the frigate Leonidas, your service on the Sorrento has come to an end, it is time for you to lead your own crew.

-Thank you, sir, I won't let you down.

-You don't have to say it, boy, I already know that ... -Olsen took his hand off Oliver's shoulder, and turned around. -GALATEA, cancel the simulation, -he said, the sea and the beach around her disappeared, as if they were vaporized in a cloud of pixels that are extinguished-. Come on Oliver, you have to put everything in order for you to assume your command.
