The Halo (part 16)

In a dense atmosphere that would hardly have allowed a human to see more than one or two meters from his face, a few dozen individuals, of an almost extinct species, writhed and emitted strange shrieks, while they made choreographed contacts with each other, with appendages similar to tweezers.

In the midst of such a peculiar gathering, the figure of a creature of greater stature than the others stood out, whose shrieks and moans rose above the others, guiding with its sounds those of the others, like the main voice of an out-of-tune choir, which is accompanied by the rest.

If it had been a human environment, it might have been a meeting of a political faction, led by a member of the high parliament, perhaps setting forth the requirements of the cities, districts or communities of their world to be brought up for discussion in a parliamentary assembly.

But those were not humans, and they were not discussing grain harvests and their need to transport them to Heracles, or the need to expand the budget allocated to the academies, to boost aeronautics and biotechnology programs.

In a submerged structure, in the infinite and depopulated ocean of that dying planet, more than thirty thousand beings inhabited resisting an almost irremediable destiny. That singing voice in the midst of that gibberish of screams, was the leader of his clan, one of the five clans still surviving.

What in another time would have been a discussion about the distribution of food in the citadel or the harvesting of crystalloderms for the construction of ships or other machinery, now was a harangue to war, to fight massively against the evil beings that invaded the galactic halo.

The leader spoke to them about how, some five hundred periods ago, an entire fleet of these invading creatures had entered the halo, entering it on their way to one of its granary planets, and they had had to stop them. They knew that species, they called themselves humans, and they came from an inner world of the galaxy, from a world that many times they had ravaged with internal wars, from a world that had rejected and expelled them, forcing them to wander in search of a new home.

Those beings were not their friends, nor would they ever be, those beings despite having almost become extinct, managed to recover and spread like a plague through the galaxy, controlling a large sector of it and now sought to expand to the halo.

In that meeting the leader of the clan, harangued to fight to the last consequences to those invaders, who now began again to incursion timidly in the halo. He called for a massive attack on the structure they had built at the limits of the galaxy. It called for a massive conflagration.

The members of the assembly cheered the words of the leader, inflamed by the emotionality of his speech, that, his clan, would be willing to follow his mandates without hesitation. Now it was necessary that the leaders of the other four clans also agreed with this.

Humans would be forced to return to the interior of their galaxy, or else their worlds would be ravaged by plague and their species would disappear forever. These were the leader's final words to his followers.
