One of the most compelling and controversial characters in the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters appears on the big screen through Oscar-winning Jared Leto, who turns into the enigmatic anti-hero Michael Morbius.
Dangerously ill, with a rare blood disease and determined to save others of the same fate, Dr. Morbius tries a desperate bet. After first appearing to be an amazing success, a dark part of it unleashes itself. Will evil be defeated for good - or will Morbius give in to his mysterious new impulses?
In his new film Morbius, based on the anti-hero Marvel, Leto brings all this together for his role as Dr. Michael Morbius, a brilliant doctor with a rare and fatal blood disease, determined to find the treatment. Morbius' genius finds a way not only to cure the disease, but also to have unimaginable powers, but at a terrible price: an uncontrollable thirst for human blood.
Morbius' increasingly desperate research leads him to combine human DNA with that of the vampire bat - the only mammal that survives only on blood - which in the course of evolution developed anticoagulants - a genetic mutation that Morbius is convinced of that he will cure him and others who have his disease.
The treatment not only heals him, but also gives him superhuman powers, the agility of an Olympic athlete, even the bat's echolocation powers - to "see" objects in space by evaluating the sounds around him. But the treatment also turns Morbius into a bloodthirsty monster (literally) - a hideous creature with lusts that he is only able to control to a certain extent.
When Morbius fuses his DNA with that of a vampire bat, he gains superhuman powers - and also turns into a hideous monster. It not only gains increased power and agility, but also the power to use echolocation - the ability of bats to "see" in the dark, based on the sound waves around them. However, he also develops a bat-like nose, sucked cheeks and a mouth full of sharp teeth like a razor.
All of these challenges — the creature's appearance and the expression of its powers — are in the hands of visual effects supervisor Matthew E. Butler. Working with Espinosa, Butler created a cinematic language that introduced the audience to Morbius' sensory perceptions. It was a challenge for which Butler was the only fit.
Stunt coordinator Gary Powell was tasked with creating the action in Morbius. This included creating ways for him to fight - considering that he never had the strength to train in this way before he gained his powers. Morbius' experiments with his powers reveal incredible agility. For these scenes, Powell asked Greg Townley, one of the greatest acrobats in the world, for a double for Morbius.
Moviegoers of a certain age can remember the New York of the 1980s - at least as it was popularly conceived in comics. Coarse, deplorable, dark - this was the storm in many of the comics read by Espinosa during this time, and this was what Espinosa tried to bring back to his eyes.
JARED LETO (Michael Morbius) is an actor, musician, director and entrepreneur.
His two decades of work as an actor included a series of intense and transformative shows. Leto's role as the ill-fated Rayon patient in Jean-Marc Vallee's Dallas Buyers Club with Matthew McConaughey earned him the Best Supporting Actor Award from several critics' organizations. He was named Best Supporting Actor by the New York Film Critics Association, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, and the Broadcast Film Critics Association. He won her first Oscar, Golden Globe, and ScreenActorsGuild Award nominations for his role, winning them all.
