The wonderful food that Thailand has to offer will be the focus of this article. In Thai society almost everyone eats out, with this in mind there is an abundance of street vendors selling anything from pork skewers to scorpions, known as street food.
The different regions in Thailand all have their own special dishes that make the most of the fresh ingredients that region has to offer.
So, let’s start!
At the time of writing we have travelled Thailand three times and have sampled the cuisine immensely. Our picks for the best dishes to try when in Thailand:

Pad Thai - The national dish of Thailand – Have you even been to Thailand if you didn’t try this?

Ingredients: Pad Thai is a noodle dish commonly made with a choice of meat or fish (or tofu for vegetarians or vegans) such as chicken, beef, shrimp or squid. It is combined with peanuts, scrambled eggs, bean sprouts, chili and vegetables then stir fried in a wok. It is commonly served with a lime wedge for added citric flavour.

Where can I try this? Available all over Thailand, from street vendors and restaurants. We recommend trying it from a busy street vendor for the authentic Thai feel.

Grilled Pork Skewers (Mu Ping) – Bursting with flavour.

Ingredients: Grilled Pork is popular amongst locals and tourists alike whether as lunch time snack or for dinner. The pork is placed onto skewers then left to marinade in a combination of spices, it is then barbecued to perfection with the final product tender and juicy.

Where can I try this? Available all over Thailand mainly from street vendors, we recommend trying it for the first time at Chatuchuk Weekend Market in Bangkok.

Tom Yum Soup – Spicy yet packed full of flavour.

Ingredients: Tom Yum Soup is a hot and sour soup predominantly made with shrimp although other types of meat or fish can be used such as chicken and squid. In addition, the main ingredients are lemongrass, chilli, lime juice and leaves, fish sauce and peppers with noodles often being added to the soup. This is one of the teams favorite Thai meals due to the hot yet fragrant dish certain to tantalize your taste buds.

Where can I try this? Available all over Thailand from both street vendors and restaurants. We recommend trying it at a local restaurant for their families take on this wonderful dish.

Fried Basil (Phat Kaphrao) – Hope you like chilli’s!

Ingredients: Fried Basil is a minced chicken or pork dish (add Tofu for vegetarians and vegans) cooked with Thai basil and a generous helping of chillis. The Thai bail gives the dish a peppery flavour while the chillis pack a punch. Commonly served with white rice and a fried egg, this dish is great for anyone wanting to try new flavours.

Where can I try this? Available all over Thailand mainly from restaurants although some street vendors will offer this, we recommend trying it at a restaurant.

Khao Soi – The dish of the North!

Ingredients: Khao Soi is a creamy coconutty, spicy soup. The soup base consists of coconut milk and red curry paste, meat or fish is then added (we always had it with shrimp) with deep fried or egg noodles. Deep fried onions are added as well as a selection of vegetables and spices to create a completely unique flavour.

Where can I try this? This dish is only available in Northern Thailand form both street vendors and restaurants, we recommend trying it from a street vendor. This dish is also available in neighboring Myanmar and Laos this is due to the large number of Burmese and Laotian people who have made northern Thailand home in the last 50 years.

Price: 55 Baht This is equal to £1.35 or $1.65.

I think most of that stuff is great! I'm not really a fan of Tom Yam for some reason. I've tried a lot of it too.

Phat Kaphrao can be a bit of shock to the uninitiated, and if you are near the place that is cooking it, the aroma is almost like pepper spray. I had to move away from an outdoor stall that was preparing it because it was causing me to sneeze and cough like mad (this was before Covid - so i wasn't immediately arrested.)

All in all, I agree with your list: These are the quintessential dishes of Thailand!
