Computer network are classified depending on their size and function. They are local area Networks, metropolitan area network, personal area network, and wide area network

LocalArea Network (LAN)
A local area network is the basic building block of any computer network. A LAN may range fromi a simple two computers connected by a cable to complex network of hundreds of conected computers and peripherals throughout a major corporation. The
distinguishing feature of a LAN is that it is limited to a given geographical area.

Wide Area Network (WAN)
A wide area network has no geographical limit. it can connect comuters and other devices on opposite sides of the world.
WAN is made up of a number of interconnected wide area network.
There are two broad technologies involved in data transmission, forming two network technologies These are Wired Networks and Wireless networks. A wired network refers to the conection of two or more computer systems or terminals using cable link as the medium of communication. A wIreless network technology, on the other hand, makes use of electromagnetic/microwave technology to establish a link in order to share resources or infomation between two workstations.

PAN Personal Area Network is a network arranged within an individual person, typically within a range of 10 meters.
Personal Area Network is used for connecting the computer devices of personal use is known as Personal Area Network.
Personal computer devices that are used to develop the personal area network are the laptop, mobile phones, media player and play stations.

Metropolitan area network MAN
a metropolitan area network is a network that covers a larger geographic area by interconnecting a different LAN to form a larger network. government agencies use MAN to connect to the citizens and private industries. In MAN, various LANs are connected to each other through a telephone exchange line.
