Growing in a bushy form, the flowers are often clustered together in pairs, and ornamental varieties can accommodate up to 15 flowers in a single cymose inflorescence. Four bracts stand below the flower, reaching halfway up the calyx. They are ciliated and point upwards. The calyx forms a cylindrical tube, 1.5 to 2.5 cm long, the corolla reaches 3 to 4 cm in diameter and serrate at the margin. Petals range in color from white to pink to dark red, with the center often darker. The capsule fruit is enclosed by sepals. The black seeds are flat and round.
