Monuments And Sculptures Of My City #69 - King David

Hello everyone. It's been a while since my last participation in this contest, Monuments And Sculptures Of My City, hosted by @strawberrry. It is now week 69 and I am very happy to have been able to catch up for this week. Read all about this contest, the rules and regulations here. Join in the fun and have a chance to win Steem prizes.

There is a place here in our city, Davao City, Philippines which was formerly called Baywalk. It was a reclaimed area stretching for about a 100 meters from the shore. The developer then put up a cemented walk along the edge of the reclaimed area where people can enjoy a nice evening with friends by the sea or have an early morning exercise, walking or jogging by the sea. The developer also put up a small zoo where he placed deer, some exotic birds and ostriches! To top it all, a golden statue was erected in the middle of the complex. This statue was a replica of the one found in Rome sculpted by the famous artist, Michaelangelo. Yes, it is the statue of King David. And right in front of the statue, a long pool was constructed where baby sharks were placed.

I do not have any photos left of the original King David showing the pool with the sharks so I just borrowed one so you can have an idea of how it looked then.

As I mentioned earlier, the Baywalk is a place where one can jog or walk along the sea. It's a wonderful experience to jog while the waves are high and splashes at you. Photo below shows me and my nephew in front of the King David statue while jogging one morning several years ago.

Notice the waves behind us. That's the edge of the Baywalk fronting the sea.

I also mentioned there were ostriches in the area. Here's a photo showing a happy ostrich with King David at the background.

A few years ago, our city council approved the construction of a coastal road which would pass through the seaside where the Baywalk is. As a result of the construction, the area was closed down and the whole place abandoned. The pool was damaged beyond repair, the ostriches have all died and the statue began to fade. Here's a recent photo of King David. You can see the cement structure behind it which is the coastal road.

No more jogging by the sea. No more night outs with friends by the sea. Ah, the price of progress.

And that's all. I hope you enjoyed this. Stay safe everyone and may peace be with you all.

(Unless otherwise specified, all other photos are mine.)
