There has been an increasing focus on agility in business operations over the past few decades to the point it has become a buzz word. Agility in business is no accident, nor is it a fanciful term. It is the result of dutify planning and proper analysis of business conditions on your way to your goals.
Agility in business refers to the necessity to change plans, alter course and adapt your business unit's direction in the face of new challenges. Just like sailing, we track a course we will travel, but when storms rise over the water we must course correct.
How can your business become more agile?
Agility is the result of operational excellence, metrics tracking and your team's talents. In order to be agile, your business unit must track the proper metrics. You need to know when you need to make a course correction. We need to build slack and alternate paths into our operations, and that requires manufacturing and industrial engineering and planning. As an agile businessperson, your mindset matters. An agile state of mind does not become a victim of sunk costs or pet projects, it adapts and changes after making a sincere assessment. Agility is the result of measurement and correction.
Agility requires you to read the map on your journey and make corrections. In today's world, businesses are becoming leaner and more agile as a necessity. The world is much the way it always has been, and you must be ready to weather the next storm or rest below the waves.
