The importance of financial education in schools.

in OCD4 years ago (edited)

Teaching children and teenagers to save money... It seems impossible (especially considering the fact that millions of adults can't do it on their own), does it? But after a subject called financial education was readapted to become one of the subjects in schools (often mandatory, depending on the organizational pedagogical regulations of each one that adopts this new challenge), a light at the end of the tunnel began to arise.

The Money Pages

The school environment (as well as the school itself because the physical unit is seen as an important center by students who really know the importance of that place for their lives) functions as a place where one learns not only cognitive knowledge, but also ways that provide autonomy with regard to the discovery of new forms of socialization (something fundamental for growth and personal development) and in the search for the realization of your goals and dreams.

The financial education (which is a discipline that has been increasingly incorporated and expanded in school grades) that is being part of the curriculum of schools is not, contrary to what many people think, a bunch of rules or tools developed based on numerical calculations... But rather, something that can be seen as a re-reading reality (and within this package are included aspects related to life planning and achievements, both individual and collective).

Moneywise

There is no more conducive place to teach children / teenagers to save money (and much more, learn how to - in fact - manage it) and psychology in partnership with technology, the school becomes the main key to creating a participatory educational plan, which can generally prioritize the dynamization of the learning process, is seen - in general - by the students and make the place a more attractive cultural, social and interactive space.

Making this growing group understand the need to learn to control their money (and also how to spend it) earlier and earlier has proved to be increasingly essential for them to become more aware adults, and therefore financially more rational. The process is neither quick nor simple, because the path needs to be built with caution... However, the result of the walk is completely satisfactory (as long as the construction and walking on the road of this knowledge is done in the proper way).

Money Mentors

Unfortunately, financial education as a current discipline in all school instances is not a reality (and I have my doubts whether it will ever reach that level of social impact), but the idea that this discipline has proved to be a great tool is irrefutable of modification with regard to the treatment that money should receive from the younger generation (who can see themselves as the protagonist of their own history).

How does this work in your country? Here in Brazil, this type of discipline is not yet as expansive as it should be (there is not such an evident interest in implementing this reality in schools), and even so, it is unfairly divided between public and private education. In the end, this differentiation between social classes ends up generating a result that does not favor everyone involved in this learning process.

The scenario has changed slowly, but positively (based on a lot of patience, determination and good will) and even though there is still a lot of work to be done, this gives hope to all professionals working in this area to have the value of their work recognized and believing that an increasingly conscious society will be formed at an earlier age. Perhaps, in the near future, society will be made up of people who are less consumerist and more skilled in their finances.

In the end it all comes from the family. Kids repeat what their parents did and they soak up the information even if they're unaware of it.

Teaching how to manage expenses is a great way to for kids to become more independent. In our post about how we are using our phones, we wrote about couple of money managing apps if you care to take a look.

Have a wonderful weekend!

The family certainly plays a fundamental role in this learning process.

Thanks for your comment, @bagofincome. Have a nice day.
