San Fele waterfalls - Cascate di San Fele

One of the most beautiful excursions was to the San Fele waterfalls, in the province of Potenza, near the mountain range of the Lucanian Apennines. It is from here that one of the many streams, the Brandano, originates, which takes a long journey through the tortuous but beautiful natural landscape of the area.

The Brandano also crosses the municipality of San Fele, characterized by a rocky area in which the stream flows and is often forced to jump from particularly high rocks to the lowest rocky layer. These natural jumps give rise to the typical waterfalls, attracting many tourists from all over.

There are several waterfalls in the area delineated by the path and we got to be surrounded by nature and its noises. The sound of flowing and falling water is a harmonious background that accompanies the tourist throughout his journey. I torrent forms watery areas, small lakes where many animal species live, from small freshwater fish to toads that jump from all sides.

In the past, several mills were built near the waterfall to exploit the power of the stream. Over the years the inhabitants have abandoned the wooded area to concentrate in the inhabited centers, abandoning the mills which have been demolished over time as they are no longer accessible.

The path is not demanding but you need to be careful in the most humid and slippery areas where you could easily fall. The nature trail lasts about 3 km but it is possible to stop in some places and admire this splendid natural phenomenon.

Una delle escursioni più belle e stato alle cascate di San Fele, in provincia di Potenza, nei pressi della catena montuosa degli Appennini Lucani. Proprio da qui nasce uno dei tanti torrenti, il Brandano, che compie un lungo tragitto tra il tortuoso ma bellissimo paesaggio naturalistico della zona.

Il Brandano attraversa anche il comune di San Fele, caratterizzato da un territorio con roccioso in cui il torrente scorre e spesso è costretto a saltare da rocce particolarmente alte sono allo strato roccioso più basso. Questi salti naturali danno origine alle cascate tipiche, attraendo molto turisti da un po' tutte le parti.

Ci sono diverse cascate nella zona delineata dal percorso e abbiamo avuto modo di essere avvolti dalla natura e dai suoi rumori. Il suono dell'acqua che scorre e cade è un sottofondo armonioso che accompagna il turista in tutto il suo tragitto. Io torrente forma della zone acquoso, piccoli laghi in cui vivono molte specie animali, da piccoli pesci d'acqua dolce ai rospi che saltellano da tutte le parti.

In passato nei pressi della cascata furono costruiti diversi mulini per sfruttare la potenza del torrente. Nel corso degli anni gli abitanti hanno abbandonato la zona boscosa per concentrarsi nei centri abitati, abbandonando i mulini che sono stati demoliti nel corso del tempo in quanto non più agibili.

Il percorso non è impegnativo ma è necessario essere attenti nelle zone più umide e scivolose in cui si potrebbe facilmente cadere. Il percorso naturalistico dura circa 3 km ma è possibile sostare in alcuni tratti e ammirare questo splendido fenomeno naturale.
