Plaigiarism is intentionally going to another persons work, taking their thoughts, and giving them no credit for thinking them.

A good way to think of it is in line with Character Assassination or Slander, but usually less of a negative effect on the original author initially, but it can get very bad like Character Assassination or Slander.

To Assassinate one's Character you might falsely accuse them of a Crime. A good example of this is when Collin County charged Judge Wooten with 5 False Felonies and she had to get a "Writ of actual innocence" from the Court. Slander is a writing or speaking a lie, with the intent to harm someone's business, job or personal life.

Plagiarism is stealing someone's intellectual or digital property, then going and selling it or otherwise earning from it. It is basically similar to Copyright, but includes copying school papers, novels, research papers, etc. The reason this applies strongly to Steemit is because there are in fact earnings envolved.

Another good way to understand Plaigiarism is to understand Fair Use. If a work is used Educationally, or sufficiently within or combined with other works as to make a new unique work, it is Fair Use. This is heavily debated as to where the line is in things like Karaoke type "Cover Artist" YouTube videos where Justin Beiber started, or now YouTube DJs with listening experiences.
