One day in my town - Bengaluru, India

Thank you for reading my earlier post about the Bangalore Palace. In case you haven't the link is at the end of this post as well. Bangalore, where I am currently staying does have many sights to see and I do recommend spending more that a day here.

The next place I will recommend to visit on your trip here is the St. Mary's Basilica. In Bangalore, you will find many churches around and the St. Mary's Basilica's is one of the oldest here, having started in the late 18th century. The St. Mary's Basilica, is situated in the older part of the city. Its architecture is based on the Gothic styles on which many churches in the United Kingdom are based on. The area where the church is located is close to the old Bristish Cantonment area of the city, which is now being used by the Indian Army. This is one of the six churches in India to be elevated to the level of a minor Basilica.

The striking architecture is one of the highlights of this Basilica. It has a towering steeple which hard to miss when you're in the surrounding areas. Once you enter the premises you can see different shrines devoted to Our Lady - Mother Mary in the periphery. You will always find many devotees here offering their prayers during the day.

On entering the church you will find the striking architecture with heavy goth influences with their pointed arches, stained glass and other ornate decorations around. As soon as you enter the church, however busy it is outside everything seems to disappear and you enter into a calm and serene state of mind. As the church is dedicated to Mother Mary, you will see different statues in honour of her around the church where many devotees stop to pray.

If you happen to come in August - September, the church celebrates the Feat of our lady with a 10 day novena from 29th August - 07th September. On 08th September which is celebrated as the birthday of Our Lady, a chariot prosession is carried out around the vicinity of the church followed by masses in different languages. Pre-pandemic this procession would be attended by huge crowds of devotees.

I do hope you find this insightful and do end up travelling to Bangalore when things are better.
