Choices! What will it be? #16 - ICE

Another summer in Italy, and we are slowly roasting.

They say that the Mediterranean climate is heading towards tropicalisation. That is, intense heat peaks, humidity and rain. Even tropical fish have been appearing on our coasts for some years due to overheating of the waters.

Today Italy has about 200 permanent glaciers, all concentrated in the Alps. It seems that last century there were more than a thousand glaciers, and that they are retreating due to global warming.

A friend of mine says we are just getting older. Instead of choosing swimwear and sunscreen to go to the beach we are complaining for the hot weather!

My friend is not a scientist, but what she says may have some truth to it. Global warming or not, getting old you can't stand the heat anymore.

My fridge is full of water and some soda. But I think is not working very well, he is getting old too, I don't remember how old he is.

The thing is, the water isn't really fresh. I don't drink too cold water when it's very hot because it's dangerous, but this is barely cool, a sign that it could be the last summer for the fridge.

However, we have to help ourselves with ice cubes because the freezer still works well. With the heat it is enough to pour two or three ice cubes in a glass of water and have it cold in seconds. Problem solved. Other than that of remembering to put ice making again.

We don't have an ice machine, just the classic plastic tray to fill with water and put in the freezer. Guess who has to remember to make ice after everyone has used it? Me.

Along with this we always have the ice pack in the freezer. Ice pack is a great invention because you do not need to refill. We put this in the water cooler to get some fresh air. Air coolers are halfway between a fan and an air conditioner. They have a drawer where you put fresh distilled water, with the ice pack to lower the temperature even more, so the cold water cools the air.

Ice packs are also great as a pain reliever. I found this out recently when I decided to hit my head on the garage door which wasn't fully lifted. I wanted to kill whoever kept it like this and I have my suspicions, but I didn't get any confession from the guilty, nor any comfort, in fact they made fun of me:

-Didn't you see the door? You could have opened it completely or crouched down to pass under it.

In the end they blamed me, and what could I do? Take an ice pack and hold it on my head!

Sometimes I think about when people didn't have ice, my grandmother had to go buy it and she only did it in extremely rare cases. To tell the truth, there are still many people who don't have ice or even a fridge.

Maybe I should shut up, keep the headache and the heat and drink the water as it is!

But please don't leave the garage door half open!
