The people say it's a way of being lazy and it's only lazy people that give to dry cleaners and pay money to laundry their clothes while Others say it's a way of working fast and alleviating unnecessary stress that would come from scrubbing with hands and using a bucket. Still others say laundry is exclusive to using machines to wash clothes and that's what they think when they hear of the word laundry. Could it be true of laundry?

Laundry as we all know is related to washing, drying and ironing. These seem to be the three basic steps but there's more. Laundry is an aspect of cleanliness or act of maintaining personal hygiene when it comes to the clothes we wear. It's a chore that goes beyond mere cleaning clothes. It ensure these clothes clean remain wrinkle-free, organised and sustainable.

Laundry plays a role in preserving the quality and appearance of a particular material and doesn't allow it fade in color. Laundry undergoes various processes beyond human imagination. Anyone that carryout this domestic chores regardless of the form it may take is regarded as a launderer or dry cleaner as it's locally called.

The primary aim of laundering is to enhance hygiene and prevent harmful bacteria that may be accompanied by sweat, dirt and stains.

There are various processes involved in laundry that's why at time, I pity those who carryout this work because the stress is just there. I can't imagine myself treating a particular piece of cloth with so much care before it is worn. We'll see what processes are involved in washing a particular cloth. I forgot to tell you that not all who wash clothes are called launderers.

A launderer carryout the following processes to accomplish his laundering. The first is to;

• Sort: Clothes are of different types, clothes, textile, and shape. We can put white coloured clothes with red coloured clothes and wash at the same time knowing fully well that it may drain its colour to the white. We cannot also carry babies clothes and mix with adults clothes to wash. We wash them separately that's why there's a need for sorting.

• Pre- Treatment: This is done to address stains on clothes so as not to wash it the wash other materials with no stains are washed. You can soak those clothes with stain probably with bleach to remove those stains faster if it's a white material or with any other bleaching agent for colored materials so as not to change the colour of the clothes.

• Loading the machine: This is a crucial step so as to enhance thorough washing. We shouldn't put all the clothes if it's much at once otherwise, the clothes won't be washed well. If you're washing blankets or big bedspread, you can do well to place it loosely instead of folding it to allow for thorough cleaning.

• Selecting detergent to use is another important step as not all detergents are good with clothes. We should consider the type of stains on fabrics when choosing detergents to use and we must measure it carefully to avoid residues on clothes.

• The water temperature when using machine is essential as hot water I'd used to remove heavy stains like oil while cold water prevents colour fading. So this balance can be done by you so as not to affect a particular fabric but rather contribute to its longevity.

• Fabric softeners and washing cycle are important processes to consider.

• Proper drying of clothes can prevent shrinkage and sometimes the longevity of the material is considered. They are some clothes that if exposed to sun for a long period of time begins to fade and wear starting from the collar if it black.

• Ironing and folding should be done with caution so as to avoid burns on people's clothes. Use the regulator on the iron to know which temperature fits a particular cloth to avoid burns.

• Prolonging lifespan: Giving our clothes to dry cleaners to do the washing for us will prolong the lifespan of that Particular cloth, because they'll use detergent that won't harm or fade away with the original colour. They're some part of the clothes that needs careful scrubbing, and dry cleaners knows all these and when applied when handling our clothes will prolong its life.

• Getting rid of unpleasant odour: laundering our clothes helps us maintain personal hygiene and getting rid of unpleasant odour that may be caused by our dirty clothes. There's this pleasant scent that i perceive when i give dry cleaners my clothes to wash and iron for me. With that perfume they use on our clothes when washing and ironing will avoid bad odour.

I know it may cost you something to give your clothes to the dry cleaners to do the washing and ironing but trust me, you'll experience a sparkling life and stay odour free.
