#SILVERPORNSATURDAY - REMEMBER SILVER CERTIFICATES?

in SteemLeo4 years ago

Silver certificates were issued in the United States from 1878 to 1964 as a representative money of paper currency. They were originally redeemable for the face value in silver dollar coins. From June 24, 1967 to June 24, 1968, just for one year, they were redeemable in silver bullion. Since 1968, they have only been redeemable for Federal Reserve Notes at their face value. They are still an acceptable form of currency today. Silver certificates were originally printed in denominations from $10 to $1000, but in 1878, 1880, 1886, they authorized the production of the $1, $2 and $5 denominations. Depending on the denomination of the certificate and it's age, they can worth a little above their face value or much more.

And now, what we've all been waiting for.............

A 1996 $500 face denomination .999 fine silver, silver certificate! I'm not sure you would call this a frosted cameo, but for lack of better wording......behind the certificate design, is a brilliant mirror finish. If you look closely, you can see my fingers holding my phone.

The ornate back side of the certificate is nicely done in a mirror finish as well. At the top, it states that it is one half pound of silver. I failed to weigh it, but if memory serves me correctly, this is literally a half pound of silver - not a half troy pound. Also, judging by the weight of it in my hand, I believe my memory to be correct.

I have more of these in different denominations, but will save them for a future post.

Thanks for stopping by and please tell me what you think in the comments below!😎 Have a lovely day!

Wow! They are awesome! And thanks for the info on the history of those, I cant wait until silver is being used as currency again, which I think it will be in the future😝

That would be awesome, indeed!😎

Thank you @blueeyes8960! Much appreciated!😎😊

Now..., that’s a real silver “certificate”! I have a few of those silver certificates, and are pretty cool to have. I was not aware of them until I started to read more about the history of US currency. I enjoyed reading the background information you provided in your article.
Have a wonderful weekend, sweet @elizabetbit, and take care 🥰🌺🤙
