WednesdayWalk & MakeMeSmile - Tranquil Animal Rescue HavensteemCreated with Sketch.

The long and winding road leading to the many new homes for the Steem communities has had me perplexed this week! Which pathway shall I take as I'd like to visit all my friends, but time has been a scarce commodity!

Today I'll be visiting the brand new home of WednesdayWalk with @tattoodjay and will throw in a MakeMeSmile for @elizacheng!

The rusty old tin man sitting atop an old tree stump next to all kinds of critters with some words of wisdom - Always better together.

This old chap greeted us on arrival at the newly revamped Village Green Market at the Kloof & Highway SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) which is situated in the Glenholme Nature reserve. They really make the most of the land that used to be part of the farm Glenholme and was bequeathed to them by an eccentric animal lover, Luther Skit Field.

A little museum inside the old farmhouse shares memories of a bygone era at Glenhome Farm and the area it is situated in and known as Kloof.

88 year old Mom Lily loves going with us and enjoys sitting under the trees if weather permits or on the wrap around veranda of the old farmhouse that now is Marilyn's Tea Gardens, while we go shopping for bargains.

Beautiful stained glass adorning the door at the entrance to the old house.

The interesting Balloon plant milkweed at the entrance to the little Nursery where I managed to get some fresh herb seedlings.

Kiddies can safely play here while Moms and Dads go shopping.

The lovely Belinda Dolphin regularly provides the entertainment and all the songs of yester-year was being sung.

We saw shoppers of all ages but soon learned that it was a special day for retirees hence the choice of music which we did enjoy! Shall we be totally honest and call a spade a spade; if you're grey, you're called a pensioner, and if you find yourself humming to the tunes of yester-year, you certainly fit the bill!
50% discount was offered at most of their little charity shops, even though everything already is sold at real bargain prices - from toys, to board games, to books, to clothes, to horse tack, to cd's, to furniture, the list goes on and on.
Discarded items people donate to help the SPCA in their quest to provide shelter and comfort to abandoned and unwanted pets - how does that saying goes - one man's rubbish is another man's treasure!

We really enjoyed the artwork which was everywhere, like this gorgeous frame made with broken china tea cups and saucers.

An old spade given a whole new look.

I was sad to see the little art gallery closed on the day we visited, but we could admire the exterior.

A Paws for Coffee van provides the very best coffee while Marilyn's kitchen prepares delicious light meals, and teatime treats.

Vervet Monkeys and Peacocks wander around as if the place belongs to them.

And then this little sweetheart entertained us by trying to swim in this water bowl; his owner said he absolutely loves water - there was none left by the time he was finished having fun! He bobbed his head in and out the water and scratched inside with his paws; I'd love to see him in a swimming pool!

Five Freedoms

Five Freedoms for Animals
The five freedoms are used as the basis for the actions of professional groups, including veterinarians and have been adopted by representative groups internationally including the World Organisation for Animal Health and National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
The five freedoms, sometimes known as Brambell’s five freedoms, are a compact of rights for animals under human control, including those intended for food or which act as working animals. The five freedoms were originally developed from a UK Government report on livestock husbandry in 1965. The five freedoms are used as the basis for the actions of professional groups, including veterinarians and have been adopted by representative groups internationally including the World Organisation for Animal Health and National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Freedom from hunger or thirst by ready access to fresh water and a diet to maintain full health and vigor.
Freedom from discomfort by providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area.
Freedom from pain, injury or disease by prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment.
Freedom to express (most) normal behavior by providing sufficient space, proper facilities and company of the animal’s own kind.
Freedom from fear and distress by ensuring conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering.

This sign in the ladies toilets really made me chuckle - take note of the instructions:)

And so our walk came to an end, a tranquil little haven in the heart of the suburbs, not only for the animals they take care of, but also for us humans who need to get away from it all at times!
